Carson, Terrance R. 2018. Encounters with Otherness: Curriculum and Pedagogical Challenges of Responding to Diversity in Canadian Teacher Education, Asian Journal of Canadian Studies, 24-2. 54-72. The purpose of this article is to find the ways to pedagogically include attention to diversity in the teacher education program. Canada is an officially multi-cultural nation with two official languages, It has never been quite possible to assimilate into one Canada. Moreover, absorbing immigrants into the existing culture is no longer the norm in an era of globalization and internationalization. We have now encountered the uncharted territory of educating teachers for diversity within a teacher education program. The major result from our work on forms of diversity in public schools in Alberta and in Canada is a shift in focus – away from an inward look at how diversity appears to the outsiders, and looking outwards towards building the foundations for forging bonds of solidarity around us.

N. 2018. New Democratic party of Canada: struggle for power during the parliamentary elections of 1984, 1988, 2011. Asian Journal of Canadian Studies, 24-2 . 5-16. This paper is to conduct a historical study of NDP struggle for power in Canada during the parliamentary elections of 1984, 1988 and 2011 under the leadership of Ed Broadbent and Jack Layton. The author finalizes the political activity of Ed Broadbent and Jack Layton during the parliamentary elections as well as their participation in the French and English debates. The author comes to the conclusion that, despite all the efforts of the best party leaders in the NDP history Ed Broadbent and Jack Layton, at the nation-wide Canadian political level, there is still a two-party system of Canada, based on the Liberals and the Conservatives. The author of the paper underlines that, unfortunately, the ideas of social democracy are not shared by the majority of voters in Canada. To the author’s point of view, social democracy in Canada as a political ideology is perceived by the Canadian electorate as a radical political movement, which does not meet the interests of a large part of the Canadian voters. Of course, the author’s opinion on this issue is debatable.

Lee, Seung-Ryul. 2018. Official Bilingualism Policy and Bilinguals, Asian Journal of Canadian Studies, 24-2. 73-95. Bilingualism is believed to be one of key identities of Canada. Unlike our expectation, bilingualism may not be a real face in provinces except New Brunswick where English and French are official languages. This paper attempts to look into data about bilingualism issued by Statistics Canada and reveal realities of bilinguals in terms of regions and ages. The results suggested that ratio of bilinguals has a little been increased since 2011 and has, particularly, been increased in the provinces near Quebec. The study also found that, reviewing bilingualism rate of the school-age populations, bilingual rate reached its height at the ages between 10 and 14 years old. This is consistent with the so-called critical period hypothesis in language acquisition.
