Previously, a number of sobering environmental and social problems were outlined that are direct results of shortsighted technological expansions. Rather than relying on the government to orchestrate a solution, a small but determined collection of entrepreneurs from various business sectors and locations have begun to re-envision and re-invent commerce. Their new approach offers businesses improved long-term financial stability and a positive relationship with the natural world and human communities. The enduring rewards from using proven natural world production themes as models for business are becoming increasingly clear. At this point, for some, it may seem foolish for business leaders not to take advantage of the innumerable trial-and-error experiences of life on Earth and to make use of the lessons learned in the redesign of our commercial endeavors. Perhaps recognizing, respecting, and using natural themes in this commercial revolution has begun to seem rational, sensible, and even essential to you.

A common complaint by battle-hardened conventional business professionals is that the full purposes of sustainable business are too theoretical, abstract, and difficult to obtain. The 25-year business veteran of recessions, corporate bailouts, mergers, takeovers, and buyouts is usually more comfortable discussing cost-saving energy efficiency improvements than conversions to sustainable energy systems. Furthermore, some appointed company sustainability leaders insist that high-minded sustainable business ideology, such as sun-powered energy sources, products of service closed-loop systems, natural world emulation, and incentivizing locally owned business, is simply not practical or particularly important. Instead, these pragmatists say we should get our heads out of the clouds and concentrate on decreasing pollution and waste, which can save the company money…

A daunting challenge ahead of us is the redesign of our commercial systems in a manner that simultaneously provides profitable businesses and enhances the natural and human communities throughout time. Bringing such a bold set of intentions to fruition transports modern man into entirely uncharted waters and requires comprehensive, outside-the-box innovation. In the past, we have operated as if the earth held unlimited resources and a boundless capacity to absorb our potent array of debilitating pollutants. To this point, the focus of business endeavors has been overwhelmingly opportunistic with relatively short planning horizons that focus mostly on near-term financial gain. A sustainable business evolution involves a radical departure from conventionality and necessitates interdisciplinary challenges that were previously never considered.A number of ideas in this book are outside traditional thoughtand, as yet, are not common topics of discussion around the proverbialwater cooler. Recalling the earlier appeal for open-mindedness,you might find that our next point of discussion will push thatrequest to its limit. I ask that you seriously consider the following proposition, even if it's out of your comfort zone. Another option is to file it in the "maybe" category for future consideration, keeping in mind that many movement supporters have found it helpful and elucidating.

Thus far, we have considered the tumultuous environmental and social problems brought on by the unplanned expansion of the first Industrial Revolution. We are becoming aware that the opportunity for a high quality of life is diminishing with each passing generation. Fortunately, we have also learned that a groundswell reform of business and our communities are now coalescing and engaging in these fundamental problems. A case was made that supports the wisdom of emulating natural world industrial strategies in our new design plan for human industry around the globe. Profitable, nourishing, and community-supporting industry is our goal and we can use the various tools and methods suggested in earlier chapters to facilitate meaningful systemic organizational change…

After our glimpse into the sustainable future in Chapter 7, we now return to the present and consider the movement’s current situation in its entirety. The numerous positive developments up to this point notwithstanding, sustainable business is still in its infancy. In order to reach full maturity, this movement must navigate some rough waters that hold a collection of rip tides, sneeker waves, and whirlpools. Much of this chapter is devoted to identifying and discussing these obstacles to the sustainable business movement and suggesting some appropriate solutions. It is important that we recognize and acknowledge these barriers to progress; only then can we become part of the solution. Ironically, we have brought on many of these threats ourselves, and potent solutions to them require that we understand, accept, and vigorously confront them.

The following is the Preamble of the Constitution of the United States of America, which was signed into law on 17 September 1787 as follows:We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.Two clear messages contained in this passage have direct relevanceto the sustainable business movement: to provide a framework thatwould first "promote the general Welfare" and second "secure theBlessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity." Both of theseintentions underpin quite a similar ambition of the sustainable business movement — to promote and secure the welfare of the current generation and of future generations. Consider the following statement: A good person is hard pressed to do the right thing without knowing what the right thing is. Let’s investigate the relevance of this simple declaration in the context of the sustainable business movement. If an ethical person is unaware of the pernicious effects caused by the industry, would that person be likely to work to change that reality? If another ethical person realizes the extent of the problems but naively advocates ineffective symptomatic reform, would a meaningful solution be any closer? A reasonable answer to both questions is no. Today, not only are uninformed people unable to remedy the root causes of our current condition but also many well-intentioned advocates are advancing misguided answers. This limited baseline knowledge of both the problems and the solutions suggests an opportunity for educators to consider a series of adjustments in the content and approach of existing formal education systems…
