Digital Educational Platforms: An Emerging School-Family Communication Channel

The establishment of effective communication channels is the basis of building good relations and encourages the participation and involvement of families. In primary schools, there is an increasing need to implement new channels of information and communication with families, as new technologies are a fundamental tool. Furthermore, if we consider the presence of foreign students in the center, this need is even more pressing. A new emerging channel is educational platforms. The focus is on their use as an innovative element in school-family communication and on how to improve family involvement in the school. This paper is framed in the project "cultural diversity and equal opportunities at school" (recercaixa2015 call) and the perceptions and attitudes of teachers and families on educational platforms were explored as a tool for information and communication between school and family. It is based on the results of an ethnography (in-depth interviews and observations) carried out in ten schools in Catalonia with a high percentage of immigration, during the 2017-18 school year. Among the main results, accessibility and ease of use, digital literacy, aptitude, speed of communication, information control, are both weak and strengths points, highlighted by both interlocutors (teachers and family members). In all the schools studied some actions have been implemented to favour their use and eliminate some identified barriers.

Experiential Characteristics of Dream–Reality Confusion

Dream–reality confusion (DRC) is the difficulty or impossibility of determining whether an event or experience took place during wakefulness or was the content of a dream. The main goal of the present exploratory qualitative study was to investigate the experiential characteristics of DRC, particularly the private concepts of this phenomenon, factors that might cause and affect DRC, as well as its consequences and strategies for discriminating memories of dreams from memories of waking experiences. Thirty participants took part in the study (21 women and 9 men), which consisted in episodic interview. The findings indicate that DRC is usually related to taking dream content for reality; the opposite situation – taking real experiences as dream content – is relatively less common. Most cases of DRC occur shortly after a dream – often just after awakening. There are two main methods of determining if an experience really happened or was a part of a dream: reflection and collation. Dreams confused with real events are realistic and usually concern common, daily routine situations. Realistic dream content is also the main cause of DRC; the dreamer’s traits, states or actions are a less common cause. The results obtained seem to support relationships between DRC and dream recall, fantasy proneness and stress. DRC is more frequently accompanied with negative than with positive or neutral emotions, mainly with anxiety and confusion. Although DRC may entail some consequences in waking life, it scarcely affects every day functioning or self-concept. Despite some limitations, the results obtained are mostly consistent with previous research and might provide a promising direction for future investigations.

Textbooks are one of the most important and also most frequently used educational tool. Their influence on education is therefore enormous. To perform optimally, textbooks need to contain certain integral elements which differentiate them to e.g. mimeographed subject matter or encyclopedia. The set of these elements in textbooks are referred to as textbook didactical equipment. The higher didactical equipment a textbook contains, the more didactically suitable it is. In this contribution, four the most often used lower-secondary chemistry textbooks in Czechia were analyzed with respect to their didactical equipment. Also, teachers’ opinion about importance of particular structural elements of textbooks were acquired with the use of a questionnaire. Out of 15 provided structural elements, the teachers (n = 387) consider explanatory text, educational illustrations and subject-matter summary to be the most important ones. On the contrary, the teachers consider a vocabulary of terms, explicit educational aims and links to other sources of information the least important - evaluated the importance as. In the analyzed textbooks in Czechia, all the structural elements the teachers consider important are present. On the other hand, the least important elements were found only in some of the textbooks. The results may serve to the publishers and textbook authors, but also for interpretation of educational outcomes once textbooks and the extent to which it is being used in education is taken into account.
