A research framework for the clean-slate design of next-generation optical access 新一代光接入全新设计的研究框架

We report the current status of our work on a new research framework for the clean-slate design of next-generation optical access (NGOA) architectures and protocols. The proposed research framework consists of two major components: A comparative analysis framework and a virtual test bed. The comparative analysis framework is based on a multivariate non-inferiority testing procedure and a notion of equivalent circuit rate (ECR); it is capable of statistically comparing multiple performance measures in an integrated way and providing quantification of the effective bandwidth for users of a candidate system with respect to a reference one based on user-perceived performances. The virtual test bed is implemented as simulation models of candidate architectures and protocols together with supporting environments providing a complete experimental platform for the comparative analysis. We review the current implementation of the virtual test bed based on OMNeT++/INET simulation framework and discuss the issues and challenges we met during initial studies together with plans and strategies to address them in the next version. To demonstrate the capability of the proposed research framework, we present preliminary results from an ongoing study of the elasticity of NGOA architectures, which show that the hybrid TDM/WDM-PON can manage the same user-perceived performances as those of the dedicated point-to-point architecture with the same line rate by varying the number of tunable transceivers for a wide range of traffic load.

Low-crosstalk 3×3 optical cross-connect using fiber Bragg gratings 低串扰3×3光交叉连接使用光纤布拉格光栅

A power-compensated, 3×3 reconfigurable, multiwavelength and bidirectional optical cross-connect (RMB-OXC) for all-optical networks is proposed using strain-tunable fiber Bragg gratings (ST-FBG) and several optical circulators. The paper presents the experimental study for the induced crosstalk due to the OXC. The RBM-OXC operation and performance are experimentally demonstrated and crosstalk is determined to confirm the low penalty incurred. In overall the selective RBM-OXC offers high reconfigurable capability, flexibility and survivability in an optical network.

Practical aspects of access network indoor extensions using multimode glass and plastic optical fibers 使用多模玻璃和塑料光纤的接入网室内扩展的实用方面

Following the successful installation of optical fibers in the access network, the next current step is to extend the optical fiber network into buildings to satisfy the ever-growing demand for broadband services. Low-cost easily installable multimode glass and plastic optical fibers are attractive media for high-capacity indoor telecom networks. Many existing buildings already have glass multimode fibers installed for local area network applications. New developments of plastic optical fibers with low losses in the 850–1300-nm range have spawned a great interest in using these fibers for indoor applications together with glass multimode fibers. Several issues arise in these interconnections, such as large variations in connector losses among randomly selected fiber segments, asymmetric link losses in bidirectional links, and variations in bandwidths among different types of fibers. In this paper we examined real-world link losses when randomly interconnecting multimode glass and plastic fiber segments having factory-installed connectors.

A new companding technique for PAPR reduction in OFDM communication systems OFDM通信系统中减小PAPR的一种新的扩展技术

One of the major disadvantages of OFDM communication systems is their high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) which degrades system performance when nonlinear power amplifiers are employed. Among the proposed PAPR techniques companding is favorable due to its simplicity and easy of implementation. In this article, using the arctangent function we propose a new compading technique for PAPR reduction. We compare the proposed technique to the previously suggested exponential companding, and μ-law companding methods. Via computer simulations it is verified that the proposed technique is better than exponential and μ-law companding methods for PAPR reduction.
