Language Play 语言游戏

J.K. Rowling and her Harry Potter series, published from 1997 to 2007, have been globally acclaimed as one of the most popular novels with the most varied target readers. A lot of reviews have been made and by far, they focused more on the literary aspects. This research offers a different way of reading Harry Potter novels since it will focus more on language play as Rowling’s style of writing, which is believed to contribute to the comprehension of the literary elements. Language play is a means of foregrounding – linguistic forms that stand out in a text. The research is done to find out the language play forms contained in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and how these forms support the understanding of the literary elements. The research employs the descriptive qualitative method; various linguistic forms of language play are taken as the data, which are then investigated further in terms of the types of linguistic features. Afterward, these are connected with the literal and contextual meanings so as to find out how they support the literary elements. The findings show that besides being entertaining, the language play helps support reader’s imagination as well as supporting the characterization and plot. The research also shows that language play deserves considerable appreciation since creating as well as understanding it needs a high language skill from both the author and readers, especially when it is intended not only to be entertaining but to support the literary elements.

IDEOLOGY IN INDONESIAN POLITICAL PARTY ANTHEMS: A STYLISTIC ANALYSIS AT THE LEXICOGRAMMATICAL LEVEL 印尼政党歌中的意识形态:词汇语法层面的文体分析

Political parties are a forum for Indonesian people from various ideological backgrounds as channels for the aspirations of a pluralistic society. The party's ideology is embodied in the vision and mission that the party aspires to when domination is obtained after the General Election is held. In this research, the anthem lyrics of the top three political parties, based on the 2019 legislative elections, were taken as the data and studied through a stylistic approach at the lexicogrammatical level to figure out the ideology in the realization of the vision and mission of the political parties. The method of the analysis applied descriptive qualitative through transitivity analysis in order to reveal the lexical and grammatical construction in the lyric. The typical processes used in each anthem characterized the cognitive frame of how the political parties set their vision and orientation towards the nation goals. It was found that the use of stylistic devices came in low frequency, including epizeuxis, parallelism, imagery, metaphor, symbolism, asyndeton and anaphora. The construction of clauses in the anthem lyrics has a significant impact in expressing the goals of political parties ideologically, so that the results of this study are expected to be an alternative reference that provides a paradigm for the voting community during the election period

DISCOURSE ANALYSIS ON JIWA YANG BERSEDIH SONG LYRICS 杨继华诗歌歌词话语分析

This research aimed to analyze the message contained in the lyrics of the song “Jiwa Yang Bersedih” by using discourse analysis approach. The primary data in this research are the lyrics of the song entitled “Jiwa Yang Bersedih”. The song lyrics are taken from the sonora.id website. The data were then analyzed using discourse analysis theory which includes language, structure and context of song lyrics. This research used theory by Paltridge (2006) in analyzing discourse elements and Mitchell (2023) in analyzing the lyric structure. Based on the results of the analysis, the song reveals a well-structured composition with a conventional format comprising verses, choruses, an interlude, and an outro. Repetition of specific phrases, especially in the verses and choruses, underlines the empathetic message, emphasizing understanding and support for individuals grappling with sorrow. The narrative flow of the song takes the listener on a journey from an invitation to express emotions to a reaffirmation of strength and the promise of being heard, illustrating resilience in the face of challenges. Linguistic elements, including pronouns, metaphors, imagery, alliteration, and symbolism, are strategically used to establish a personal connection with the listener and vividly convey emotional struggles.

PHONOTACTIC AND PHONOLOGICAL SYSTEM IN KEMPO AND S>H KOLANG SUBDIALECTS 肯坡语和哥朗次方言的语音系统和语音系统

This study explores the phonological system in the Kempo subdialect (MSdK) and S>H Kolang subdialect (MSdS>H) in West Manggarai Regency. The study was conducted at nine survey sites by interviewing 200 vocabularies compiled by Swadesh. I analyzed the data by comparing the phonological systems between the two subdialects and formulating the possibilities of their occurrence in the word. The results show that the two subdialects have slightly different phonological systems. They have a different inventory of vowel phonemes: 15 consonant sounds in MSdK and 17 consonant sounds in MSdS>H. This study also found three non-pulmonic consonant phonemes in the two subdialects: bilabial /ɓ/, Alveolar /ɗ/, and Velar /ɠ/. In the case of the two subdialects, the non-pulmonic consonant phonemes have unique characteristics: (1) appearing in the initial and middle positions of words, making it impossible for three pulmonic consonants (i.e., consonants /b/, /d/, and /g /) to appear in the initial position. The existence of the three consonant phonemes only appears when at the beginning of the word, it is preceded by another consonant forming a cluster and located on the first syllable (i.e., /mb/, /nd/, and /ŋg/). The two subdialects also have a relatively similar inventory of vocal phonemes: 6 vowel phonemes. Diphthongs are almost identical between the two subdialects, 7 diphthongs which only appear in mono-syllable words and are located at the end of words. In contrast, two additional diphthongs in MSdS>H appear in two-syllable words and the middle position of the word.

THE REPRESENTATION OF NATIVE AMERICAN IN THE LONE RANGER FILM: A GENETIC STRUCTURALISM ANALYSIS 《独行侠》电影中印第安人的表现:基因结构主义分析

Racism is part of America's dark history. Racism seems to have never been resolved. This article examined how racism is narrated in The Lone Ranger Film. As genetic structuralism studies, The Lone Ranger film is exploited both intrinsically and extrinsically. At first glance, this film features American-Indian characters but with a white character. This is contradictory considering that American Indians are Native American tribes who have colored skin. Therefore, this film is used as an object of study to look at social construction, especially about Native Americans, which actually wants to be conveyed to the wider community, and the empirical reasons for this construction are shown. The research results showed that intrinsically, the character Tonto, played by Johnny Depp (a white), correlated to the economic purpose. As a mass culture, this film was produced to gain profits. choosing John Depp is a form of strategy to achieve the film's success because Johnny Depp is one of the top actors who has many fans. Portraying characters using well-known actors is one of the strategies for achieving the success of a film. Furthermore, this film showed how Native Americans are reconstructed by a new image. White and smart Americans are positive stereotypes. It is contradictive due to This is very contradictory considering that Native Americans are a group that has a negative stereotype. Native Americans are also a minority that experiences a lot of discrimination, especially from white or European-American groups. In conclusion, the stereotype of native Americans in the film Lone Ranger is constructed in different stereotypes showing how the whites (European-Americans) have always occupied a high position in the social strata. This film shows that Native Indians can have the same position in the social strata if their skin is colorless. This makes racism actually perpetuated through this film.
