ABSTRACT A fluorescence dot area meter is an instrument that measures halftone dot sizes on printing plates that contain one or more fluorescent compounds. Currenfly, dot sizes on printing plates are being measured with a reflection densitometer, which provides questionable results. In the proposed instrument, a printing plate is excited by visible light in the blue-green region and the amount of fluorescent emission is measured. This method provides a high signal to noise ratio and freedom from directional effects.
