As a traveler, you're on the go every day, either practicing on the unit or seeing the sights. But all of this activity doesn't necessarily equal a good exercise program. If you don't incorporate a daily workout into your routine, what's your excuse? Perhaps the length of your contract doesn't justify joining a gym. Maybe the fitness center isn't open when your schedule permits. Then again, moving from city to city might throw off your regular routine. If any of these statements sound familiar, it is time to develop an on-the-road training program.

A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Artis Ann Gilbert, a diagnostic ultrasound sonographer, takes pride in knowing that, when she graduated from the city's university 27 years ago, she was only the third ultrasound technician to do so. Since then, she's assisted with opening ultrasound facilities within small community hospitals in the surrounding area. That is, until Artis began traveling three years ago. Today, she brings her team skills and spunky nature to a variety of acute care facilities nationwide.

Columbia has been the center for government, education, and commerce and the virtual geographic heart of South Carolina since its founding in March of 1786. Incorporated in 1854 and named for Christopher Columbus, this picturesque city was the first planned state capital.

Noting the blood all over the patient's body, Andy Cole, RN, EMT-B, knew the man had been through an ordeal. His arm was severely lacerated from his elbow to his shoulder. In fact, there were numerous lacerations on the patient, from head to toe, especially on his chest and abdomen. They weren't clean cuts, either, such as the kind that would be made by a knife or shattered glass. They were more like rips and tears, as if a jagged object inflicted the wounds.

My foray into traveling began as an alternative to a staff position I had accepted at a facility in the Rocky Mountains. After moving out West from a small North Carolina tobacco town, I discovered the hospital was seriously understaffed. Beginning to feel more than just a little unappreciated, I asked two mobile professionals to give me some tips on how I could explore the greater possibilities that traveling offers.
