The recent case of Sugarbook has sparked concerns among the public who are worried about young girls using applications on the Internet. Risky behaviors and worrying trends make online Internet users vulnerable to danger. Risky behaviors exhibited by youth such as distributing sexually explicit images and sharing sexually provocative photographs will not only expose them to danger but also be regarded as contravening the laws. There are also reported cases of revenge pornography among teenagers in local media. Despite the lack of research on this new trend of communication among children and young people in Malaysia, daily local newspapers have released worrying news of how relationships built on the Internet can turn into tragedies for innocent young people, especially teenagers and children. This paper discusses the possible meaning of sexting, the current laws, and the reported cases on sexting, particularly those captured in Malaysian media. This paper used secondary data and information gathered from articles in refereed journals to understand the legal differences between Malaysia and other jurisdictions, namely the USA and the UK. This paper suggests that besides the importance of educating youth to create legal awareness regarding proper use of the Internet, there is an urgent need to revisit the relevant legislations and practices on the governance of sexting in order to protect children and teenagers.

The moment when WHO declared the COVID-19 disease as a pandemic, public immediately switch on to access the media for every bit of information regarding the disease. This is because media is the mediator for health communication between the government and the people. By understanding the risk and danger, the media role in creating health awareness could potentially help to improve better health outcomes. They have the capability to influence one’s health behaviours and response to the disease. Health communication is a key factor for saving lives in this pandemic. Thus, this review paper aims to assess the media’s health communication strategies of promoting preventive behaviours to COVID-19, and the associated role of Health Belief Model (HBM) in it. The purpose is to examine (a) the relationship between media and health communication strategies towards COVID-19 preventive behaviours based on HBM and the (b) predictors that engage in preventive behaviours. Utilizing HBM components is crucial for this study as it has been widely applied to study human-related behaviours. This research will allow identifying which predictors of HBM could possibly improve and make the public obey with their preventive behaviours. Moreover, the application of HBM could be a good tool to envision the exact preventive practices among Malaysian population, hence implementing the strategies in their platform for a better health outcome.

This study focused on the role of information exposure, information consumption and individual lifestyle on the inclination towards behaviour change during the Covid-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, the number of individuals who breached the pre-determined SOP meant to curb the virus transmission kept on increasing even though the government had repeatedly reminded the citizen through various means of communication. This study aimed to answer, (i) what are the types of information exposure that would affect individual inclination towards behaviour change; (ii) what levels of information consumption would affect individual inclination towards behaviour change; and (iii) what types of lifestyles which would affect individual inclination towards behaviour change. An online survey through Google form was administered for a period of 30 days and the survey received 419 responses. Descriptive and correlation analysis were conducted. The findings showed that individuals who practised selective information exposure had significant relationship with behaviour change compared to individuals who practised news avoidance as well as individuals who actively sought information. In terms of consumption, individuals with moderate information consumption had significant and moderate relationship with inclination towards behaviour change as compared to individuals with basic and advanced information consumption. Individuals with the striver, experiencer and survivor types of lifestyles showed significant relationships with behaviour change during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study showed that there were other variables that could contribute to the behaviour change particularly in the context of health-related issues.

New media have been used in our life, especially by young generations. Following the 'blogging' phenomenon, social networks have become very popular among users around the world. Ethics reflect a community's ideas about the rightness or wrongness of an act and the distinction between virtue and vice. It raises several questions if the knowledge of ethics is significantly related to the ethical use of the Internet. This paper aims to examine the level of knowledge on ethics and the use of social networking. Besides, it identifies a relationship between knowledge of ethics and social networks among Islamic studies students compared to non-Islamic studies students. This study employs a quantitative approach using a survey of 311 university students randomly selected, of which 164 are students from Islamic studies and 147 are from non-Islamic studies backgrounds. This study reveals a positive correlation which is rather moderate. Both variables are moderately correlated in which changes in the first variable are likely correlated with the changes in the second variable. The T-test indicates significant differences between the background of study and knowledge of ethics. It is found that the background of the study determines the knowledge level of ethics. The ethical usage level of social networks does not indicate any differences between Islamic and non-Islamic studies. Since this study involves Malays by ethnic groups, a study that involves non-Malay students can be an extension of this study, resulting in a better explanation of the knowledge of ethics concerning the ethical use of social networks.

This special issue reflects some of the articles presented in 3rd International Conference of Media, Islam, and Communication (ICIMAC 2021) that was held virtually on 10th and 11th July 2021 organized by the Communication Program and New Media Communication Program, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM). About seven articles from ICIMAC 2021 were selected for this issue and most of them convey the equivalent connotation entitled The Role and Impact of Media During COVID-19. These articles presented the various roles of media in transmitting information or creating awareness during the pandemic and its impact in shaping one’s attitude towards matters related to health issues. The current COVID-19 pandemic has caused a lot of crises and threatened global health. The impact of the outbreak covered from economics, education, politics, and many others. This global health crisis has affected the way people perceive today’s world and undeniably, media play a very crucial role during the pandemic as people rely so much on various media platforms for information related to COVID-19. Despite the diversity of this collective endeavor, the contributions fall into four areas of research but mostly in relation with the COVID-19 pandemic: (1) media and health communication, (2) information exposure towards behaviour change, (3) media dependency, and (4) other media and communication related issues. The chaotic situation of COVID-19 has challenged all media outlets to utilize their available platforms especially the social media at the utmost in transmitting related information, educating people on the danger of the virus, and even convincing them on the importance of vaccination (Arriage et. al, 2021). However, the challenge on how to transfer the knowledge raised interest of many researchers in the field of media and communication to explore. Currently, scholars believe that all media especially social media have the potential to deliver fast and effective information if they are used responsibly and ethically (Chan et. al, 2020).
