In diesem Aufsatz argumentiere ich, dass die soziale Zuschreibung von Protesten ein entscheidendes Moment in der sozialen Konstruktion sozialer Bewegungen darstellt. Ich diskutiere dieses Konzept an zwei relevanten Kontexten, in denen Proteste gesellschaftlich konstruiert werden: bewegungsbezogene Gegenöffentlichkeiten und massenmediale Öffentlichkeiten. Mein Plädoyer dafür, die kommunikative Konstruktion von Bewegungsprotesten als soziologisches Forschungsthema ernst zu nehmen, mündet in der Entwicklung eines konzeptionellen Rahmens für zukünftige Forschung. This issue has not yet been sufficiently addressed in theory and research. To design a fair algorithm, for instance, stakeholder procedures should precede technical tweaks. Diffusion of these algorithms is triggered with the help of sociological knowledge. Against lines of criticism calling for a more applicable sociology, such developments rather show that practice makes use of sociology long since, yet not in terms of critical observation.

Anders als von der Bildungsexpansion und dem postmaterialistischen Wertewandel her zu erwarten war, ist das kulturelle Interesse jedoch nicht größer geworden, sondern hat sich reduziert. Überproportional gesunken ist der Museumsbesuch unter den Jüngeren, während er unter den Älteren gestiegen ist. Die Altersbeziehung des Publikums unterliegt aufgrund dessen einer Neustrukturierung und nimmt längerfristig einen ähnlichen Verlauf wie in anderen Sparten der Hochkultur. Museum attendance has likewise decreased among them – despite a better museum infrastructure – whereas it increased among the older ones. As a consequence, the age relationship of museum attendance is undergoing a change that parallels the development in the other areas as of the arts, such as opera and classical concerts. Whereas the visitors used to be younger than the general population in earlier times, they are now near or even above the average age of the general population.

Auch Karl Jaspers’ post-koloniale Alternative zu weltanschaulicher Kommunikation auf gleicher Augenhöhe im Zeichen einer ‚Achsenzeit‘ ist gescheitert. Der viel berufene Aufschwung der Religionen besteht global gesehen in pluralistischer Beliebigkeit, die den Charakter von Religion überhaupt verändert hat. ‚Transzendenz‘ ist immanent geworden. This statement does not only refer to his world-famous essay on The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. It is also true of his extensive attempt to confirm and extent his thesis through careful comparison with other world religions. But he fell into the circular trap of colonialist orientalism because he simply proved what had been his own preconditions. On the other hand, members of other religious communities used and still use protestant Christianity selectively to modernize their own cultures. The empire hits back! Karl Jaspers’s Axial Age, his post-colonial attempt in cultural communication on equal level, failed as well. Today, from the global point of view the famous renewal of religion consists in arbitrary pluralism. The very character of religion as such has changed. Transcendence turned immanent. The religion of today is no longer the religion of Max Weber.
