The paper explores the diverse conceptualizations of politicization in the context of social movements. It shows that existing research examines very different dimensions of politicization — namely both changes outside as well as inside social movements. Furthermore, the paper demonstrates that studies of internal and external politicization come to different conclusions because within both diverging analytical criteria and levels are addressed.

advanced democracies, distributive conflicts were argued to have been pacified. Yet, struc-tural change might lead to new economic risks and a re-politization of distributive conflicts. This contribution critically discusses the main findings of the insider-outsider litera-ture as an example of re-politicized distributive conflicts. Although the insider-outsider conflict cannot be considered a cleavage in Mair and Bartolini’s understanding, the conflict between labor market insiders and outsiders demonstrates that distributive conflicts still matter for today’s politics. Yet, the content of distributive struggles has changed: In advanced societies with their diversified risk structure and sophisticated welfare states distributive conflicts are about specific social and regulatory policies that have different impli-cations for individuals depending on their situation on the labor market.

: Politicization currently is a topic and a concept that is quite much discussed in the Political and Social Sciences, but despite its frequent use, it often remains underspeci-fied. Against this backdrop it is the goal of this article to systematically discuss and devel-op the concept of politicization and its usage. The main focus is set on its normative and theoretical conceptualisation, the interrelations with two other key concepts in Political Science – politics and democracy – and the analytical focus of the concept. First, key ques-tions and theoretical steps related to conceptualizing politicization and its linkages to the concept of politics will be lined out. Two ideal-typical conceptions of politics will be discussed, i. e. a) an understanding of politics as a system, field or sphere, and b) an understanding of politics as action. The remainder of the argument is based on an action-orient-ed understanding of politics and politicization, arguing that politics and politicization po-tentially can take place anywhere and anytime. In the second section, the normative-theo-retical question if, and to what extent, politicization is compatible with representative democracy will be addressed. After this, existing and possible interrelations between politicization and democracy in the EU will be conceptualized, to conclude with a typology of four types of interrelations between politicization and democracy and a short research out-look.

I argue that radicalization of women can be understood as female politicization. To fully grasp the process of politicization it is necessary to examine the interplay between constructions of feminity and masculinity. To this end, I deploy a hegemony theory framework – illustrated with female involvement in ISIS – to show that the politicization of women implies, on the one hand, becoming a subject through dynamic adaptation of the respective gender order. On the other hand, this adaptation threatens to depoliticize male ISIS members, who must – at least temporarily – share the area of terror with women of ISIS. The importance of gender and radicalization in the context of de-/politicization indicates, that there is an increasing simultaneity of depoliticization and politicization processes. Yet, there is the question of the normative desirability of politicization when it comes to radicalization.

Summary: We examine the question to what extent organized civil society is under pres-sure from the Right. On the basis of qualitative research, right-wing actions and reactions in trade unions, churches and the (organized) sports sector are analyzed. On the one hand, the right can politicize organization-specific conflicts; on the other hand, its activities are limited to marginal areas.
