Abstract This chapter first examines tourism development by each pillar (economic, sociocultural and environmental) of the triple bottom line of sustainability. It then explores tourism development specifically at World Heritage sites (WHSs) in terms of the host and guest sides of tourism. A brief case study is presented of the Old Town of Lijiang, a cultural WHS in China.

Abstract This chapter indicates that 'postmodernism' and 'globalization' are essential phenomena when examining heritage management and conservation activities at World Heritage sites (WHSs). The reality of heritage management and conservation activities at WHSs is examined in relation to philosophy and approach, duties and responsibilities, tourism, and Eastern and Western perspectives. A brief case study is presented of the 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range', a cultural WHS in Japan.

Abstract This final chapter summarizes the key points in the previous chapters regarding World Heritage sites (WHSs), Eastern and Western viewpoints on World Heritage issues, heritage management and conservation activities, heritage tourism development and marketing, changes in local communities and views towards these changes, and contemporary developments in and around the concept WHSs. A conceptual model is suggested, which illustrates the main relationships between WHSs, WH status, conservation activities, tourism and local communities.

Abstract This chapter first examines the themes in tourism marketing generally and then narrows its focus down to destination marketing that is related more closely to World Heritage sites (WHSs). The latter section discusses World Heritage status as a brand, the stakeholders and organizations in marketing for WHSs, and visitors' responses to World Heritage status. A brief case study is presented on promoting, discouraging or banning tourism at several WHSs.

Abstract The first part of this chapter discusses contemporary developments within the concept of World Heritage sites (WHSs). These developments include the List of World Heritage in Danger, the notion of 'cultural landscape' and the concept of 'historic urban landscape'. The next part examines contemporary developments around the notion of WHSs, which can be further categorized into culture-focused and nature-focused concepts. The culture-focused ideas comprise 'intangible cultural heritage' and 'Memory of the World'. These two, and World Heritage, are three fundamental initiatives for international cultural heritage conservation of UNESCO. The nature-focused notions consist of 'UNESCO Global Geoparks' and 'biosphere reserves', which are the main schemes for global natural heritage conservation of UNESCO together with World Heritage.
