Orthodoxy in the Face of Contemporary Challenges: The Ukrainian Context
Pub Date : 2023-09-01 DOI: 10.55221/2693-2148.2449
Olena Predko, Ihor Maksymenko
The article explores Orthodoxy in Ukraine as represented by the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. It also highlights the equivocal position of Filaret (Denysenko), who previously represented the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate and continues to attempt to influence the country's Orthodox configuration. Despite the inherently anti-war rhetoric espoused by the leaders of the Orthodox Churches, who view war as a manifestation of evil and violence, they each harbor unique motivations that shape their respective stances on the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war. On one hand, their argumentation often relies on ethical principles derived from canonical biblical teachings. Conversely, they also strive to assert the correctness of their own viewpoints, often overlooking their adversaries' arguments. The article underscores that fostering understanding among the Orthodox Churches in Ukraine could be achievable through constructive dialogue with the state, a process that might help temper the radicalization of conflicts.

Distortion of Religious History in the Concept of "Russian World" “俄罗斯世界”观念对宗教史的扭曲
Pub Date : 2023-09-01 DOI: 10.55221/2693-2148.2448
Oleksandr Lukyanenko
The article continues the series of research illustrating the formation of the idea of the “Russian world” in the religious discourse of Orthodox Russia. The main attention is paid to the ideological stamps used by the Patriarch of Moscow Kirill while preaching and giving public speeches. The study summarizes the idea of the monolithic “Holy Rus” with Moscow as a core-city developed to support Vladimir Putin’s annexationist geopolitical policy. The paper cites examples of falsification of historical facts in religious and political spheres applied with the intention to form a strong propaganda background in the conditions of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Kirill Gundyaev uses the images of the Battle of Kulikovo and the medieval Moscow prince Dmitry Donskoy to draw historical parallels with Russia’s current war with Ukraine. To strengthen his own position as the head of the modern religious front, the patriarch repeatedly returns to the ideological concept of the blessed war, using legends about the blessing of the troops and divine providence in the medieval wars of the Moscow principality.

Models of Social Activity of Protestant Churches In The Context of Russia's Military Aggression Against Ukraine
Pub Date : 2023-09-01 DOI: 10.55221/2693-2148.2450
Ihor Lutsan
The main focus of our research intention is to outline constructive models of social activity of religious communities in the context of Russia-Ukraine war. The subject of the study is the Protestant denominations of Ukraine and their socially relevant activities, which today, having acquired a multi-vector orientation, are most clearly expressed and most noticeable in such forms: missionary work, charity, volunteer movement, in particular, assistance to the army; organizing and providing social services to individuals and groups in need of assistance to ensure their holistic development, and thus providing spiritually oriented social and psychological rehabilitation of military personnel, demobilized combatants and their families and people who are the victims of war. The chaplaincy is important here, as its main goal is to provide social, psychological and pastoral support to military personnel in the performance of military duty. It is noteworthy that such activities, embracing the entire spectrum of social life, are undoubtedly aimed at solving socially challenging issues and ensuring social justice, which is extremely important today. The author also focuses on the manifestations of social disruptiveness, which often end up being devastating and can be aimed at destabilizing social ties, in particular, in the form of inertia in finding effective mechanisms of protection and support, as a process of assistance and mutual aid.

Reform of Orthodoxy: Current Challenges and Tasks
Pub Date : 2023-01-01 DOI: 10.55221/2693-2148.2467
Hennadii Khrystokin, Vasyl Lozovytskyi
The article analyzes the current state of Orthodoxy, and highlights the problem of its reform, which consists of the need for renewal and modernization. The article establishes that the reasons for the need to reform in Orthodoxy are the crisis of the unity of the Ecumenical Church, the crisis of the management structures of local churches, the crisis in local church communities, and the significant dependence of Orthodoxy on national traditions. The article notes that the main aspects of church reform are the renewal of tradition, the need for a new reading of the canons, rethinking the negative historical experience of the past, and overcoming the church's dependence on state dictates and political ideologies. The renewal of Orthodoxy requires the formation of a modern Orthodox culture that will develop partner relations with civil society and the state, be open to science, philosophy, and modern technologies, produce modern theology, and have a productive dialogue with other Christian churches. An important conclusion of the article is the proposal to distinguish between top- down reforms of Orthodoxy, which are carried out only by the church leadership, and its bottom-up renewal, in which all active Orthodox and public groups of society can participate. The authors have found that Ukrainian Orthodoxy is facing the task of implementing the decisions of the social doctrine of the Ecumenical Patriarchate into its own social doctrine, rethinking its attitude to modern economic and legal processes, problems of civil society, and the rule of law, education, and culture. Only the idea of church renewal can become the basis for productive dialogue among churches in Ukraine and promising partner relations with society and the state.

Hagia Sophia, Religious Freedom, and the Destruction of the Christian Cultural Heritage in Turkey

A lot has happened in the last 10 years in Turkey. The Gezi Park protests in the summer of 2013 started as a peaceful citizens’ demonstration against the government’s plans to demolish a park in Istanbul city center in order to open space for the building of an Ottoman-themed mole and a new mosque, and after disproportionate police violence, turned into a mass movement against an increasingly authoritarian rule. The 2015 break-up of the Kurdish-Turkish peace process botched hopes for ending the 40-year conflict in the country’s Southeast. The failed coup in 2016 lead to ferocious crackdown on oppositional politicians, journalists, academics and public intellectuals. Add to this the debacle of Turkey’s foreign policy in Syria, Libya, and Cyprus, the economic crisis looming high in the last years and the increasing poverty rates that have brewed social discontent and anger and have translated into declining popularity of the ruling party.
