Destinations are constantly searching for ways to improve tourists’ dining experiences. However, the impact of dining styles on tourists' social and wellness needs has received limited attention. This study explores the influence of dining styles on the outcomes of tourists' food experiences. Two empirical experiments investigated how sharing meals impacts tourists' perceptions of intimacy, authenticity, and overall subjective wellbeing. The findings demonstrate that when tourists share food, it positively affects their interpersonal connections, their perception of authenticity, and their subjective wellbeing. The study compares two culturally distinct groups: U.S. and Chinese tourists, revealing that U.S. tourists perceive food sharing to have higher impact on authenticity and wellbeing compared to their Chinese counterparts. This study represents the first effort to unveil how tourists assess the act of sharing food while traveling. These results contribute to our theoretical understanding of convivial dining outcomes and social dynamics during travel. Furthermore, they offer insights to destinations on how to design and provide food-sharing experiences that cater to tourists' social and wellness needs while leveraging the unique aspects of their food-sharing cultures.

Involvement has been viewed as a central tenet of experience. Nevertheless, the predominant types of involvement in the service and marketing literatures arguably fail to fully capture the involvement of customers throughout their experiences. As a result, this research proposes a new type of involvement, namely situated involvement to investigate how tourists’ interest in/motivation for a dining experience is enhanced in restaurants. The research also investigates whether such involvement impacts the dining experiences. The findings from 20 interviews in Queenstown, New Zealand reveal 13 themes related to factors contributing to situated involvement. Moreover, it appears that situated involvement plays a positive role in dining experiences of tourists.

Ecosystem theory is becoming more prevalent in tourism as a powerful concept to explain value creation at tourism destinations, especially in developing countries. However, for well-established destinations collective action, which is a prerequisite for successful ecosystem operation, is difficult to ignite. This phenomenon can especially be observed at community-based destinations in structurally well-developed countries like Switzerland that consist of a large number of independent actors whose offerings are complementary. Together, these independent actors (henceforth called complementors) form the tourism product which is greater than the sum of its parts provided that the complementors collaborate. This study investigates if the active integration of ecosystem complementors by the destination management organization (DMO) fosters complementors’ trust towards the DMO. This is important as trust is the functional prerequisite for effective collaboration. Further, we analyze whether this effect is amplified by high levels of procedural fairness. The results show that the systematic integration of complementors positively influences complementors’ trust towards the DMO. Also, if integration processes are executed in the context of high procedural justice trust levels are further enhanced. Thus, systematic complementor integration can be a crucial and efficient step towards a functioning ecosystem at community-based destinations. The results inform DMO practitioners as well as scholars about the dynamics of successful ecosystem operation at tourism destination management.

Residents are key actors in the management of tourist destinations, especially in times of uncertainty such as those that characterize the current context of multidimensional crisis (ecological, political, social or economic). The role of tourism in these crises, its contribution to their acceleration or its work in recovery, makes it necessary to deepen the support of residents for tourism in complex times such as the present. The context generated by the COVID-19 health crisis is a good framework for this reflection, although it has not been sufficiently explored. This article draws on Social Exchange Theory to explain residents' support for tourism in urban destinations during periods of uncertainty such as those generated by the health crisis, focusing on factors that have so far been little explored: risk perception, community involvement and the management of tourism constraints. A structural multiple indicator multiple cause (MIMIC) model is proposed to test the theoretical model. Using data derived from a survey of 342 residents in the city of Madrid (Spain), the results show that, in addition to benefits as a predictor of residents' support for tourism in contexts of uncertainty, risk perception and the management of tourism constraints are also relevant determinants of this support. The findings have important implications for decision-makers and public managers of urban destinations in the current period of multiple crises.

K. Grande, Natalie Haynes
This paper provides a semi-systematic review of the extant literature surrounding the concept of camping and campground revenue management from 1984 until 2023 and presents a conceptual model that encircles and categorizes all the subjects treated in the previous research which was found to be disparate and multidisciplinary in nature. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the state of knowledge in the field and a conceptual structuring of the topic which was previously lacking. By synthesizing the various disparate conceptual strands of the topic that have developed over time, the paper presents a revenue management decision-support tool tailored for campsites that organizes the camping revenue management literature around its own conceptual model whilst also highlighting areas for future research.

Cosmopolitan tourists in P2P accommodation: An exploratory study of online reviews on airbnb P2P
Pub Date : 2023-11-24 DOI: 10.1177/14673584231218105

This study compares guest reviews of Airbnb accommodations by country of origin, in order to identify cultural evidences. An exploratory study was conducted in two selected Airbnb accommodations through content analysis of 775 reviews by guests from 32 different countries. The authors analysed the data according to two dimensions of Hofstede’s Cultural Theory: (1) individualism/collectivism - the vision that the well-being is achieved by the action of each individual versus the collaboration of the society as a group; and (2) masculinity/femininity – a patriarchal society seeking success versus a society where quality of life is based on the well-being of all. The results suggest homogeneity in online reviews by country of origin. This result may be justified by the prevalence of cosmopolitan tourists in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) accommodation – those travellers with experience worldwide, looking to contact with the locals and who avoid reflecting cultural values due to their cosmopolitan mindset. The paper provides important implications both for managers of P2P platforms looking for universal legitimacy and to the theoretical research into cultural studies regarding the cosmopolitanism of the sharing economy.

Safety, security, and clean air have been given some appreciable attention in tourism research and practice. However, little is known about TikTok short video narratives of safety, security, and clean air of a tourism destination. To fill this knowledge gap, this study was guided by narrative transportation theory to examine the impact of TikTok short safety, security, and clean air video narratives on potential tourist intention to experience. The snowball sampling technique was employed to select 357 potential tourists, and the structural equation modelling analysis was utilised to analyse the survey gathered data. The results revealed that there were significant positive associations between short video narratives about safety, security, clean air, and intention to experience. Additionally, the moderating effects of TikTok short video narratives showed a significant positive impact between security, and clean air on intention to experience. Destination marketers and management could utilise TikTok short video narratives in promoting tourism sites through the perspective of tourists.

This study conducts a bibliometric analysis to provide a complete and comparative study of leadership styles in hospitality literature published in recent decades. Two curated databases (Web of Science and Scopus) were chosen and combined to perform a co-word analysis to detect the main themes related to leadership in hospitality. This method analyzes the co-occurrence of topics in documents. The analysis yielded seven thematic clusters. Transformational and servant leadership and abusive supervision are the most widely researched leadership styles in hospitality and are associated with employee outcomes such as job, organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), and commitment. Employee outcomes such as creativity and innovation seem to be receiving research attention. This review reveals a need to focus research on underexplored styles such as paradoxical, spiritual, or responsible leadership.
