The article presents the work of the neglected German writer Hans Multerer from the town of Neuern on the Czech side of the border mountains – Bohemian Forest. The work of this author is viewed in the broader cultural and historical context of the Bohemian-Bavarian Austrian borderlands of the first half of the 20th century. Multerer is understood here as a representative of the so-called culture of hospitality, which is opposed to the nationalist-tinged frontier literature (Grenzlandliteratur) and the literature of the homeland (Heimatliteratur). With a dense style that functionally uses forms of dialect and genres of regional themes, Multerer offers an original insight into the existential issues of the modern subject.

This article goes into the process of adapting the novel ,Die Wand‘ by Marlen Haushofer. An attempt is made to further explore the effects of transmediation (Elleström 2017) and intermediale Aufpfropfung (Wirth 2006) at the narrative perspective level. The key question, which is addressed based on an analysis of selected theatrical adaptations, is: What effects does transmediation and intermediale Aufpfropfung have on the perception of the literary-theatrical (filmic) text on the narrative level? And further: Which intermedial transfers come into play on the narrative level and which narrative factors of the original are suppressed during the adaptation process?

A novel as a contribution to the reconciliation of Czechs and Germans after 1989. With this idea in mind, the Bavarian writer Manfred Böckl wrote his novel ‚Šumava. Die Saga des Böhmerwaldes‘. The historical novel describes the coexistence of two nations over a period of 600 years. The article presented here presents the life and work of the writer Manfred Böckl with a focus on the Bavarian-Czech theme in his work. At the same time, it shows how and in what form the author‘s expressed wishes are reflected in the novel ‚Šumava. Die Saga des Böhmerwaldes‘.

In his story Der Honigbaum about the settlement of Šumava in the 16th century, Blau narrates the story of a Bavarian, Wolf Weiß, who moves with his wife from the Bavarian village Loifling (near Cham) under Mount Ostrý. The adaptation is difficult for Wolf, but Wolf eventually becomes fond of his new homeland. The nub of the story is an astonishing encounter between Wolf and a bear in the hollow of a tree full of honey. This event can be understood as an unheard event that has occurred; the text can thus be assigned to the genre of the novella in Goethe’s sense. The novella and its typical unheard event that has occurred seem to be a suitable genre for Blau in more than one case to portray life in ancient Šumava

The article focuses on the question of which parameters applied to reviews in the scholarly journal “Monthly Extracts of Old and New Learned Things” (Monathliche Auszuege alt, und neuer gelehrten Sachen) from Olomouc. These parameters and the special nature of the review of a scholarly publication are outlined using a concrete example: A book review of an entomological work penned by Charles Bonnet will be discussed in more detail. In it, the scientist deals with the question of parthenogenesis in the animal world. The reviewer comments on this result in the light of the guidelines that applied to the journal.

Just as form follows function, so does the graphic novel form follow the story as Nora Krug reveals her own family’s past. Krug deals with different forms of the concept of home to answer the question: How do you know who you are, if you don’t understand where you come from? Forms of the reflective concept of homeland follow their function in Krug’s graphic novel, i. e. the graphic side is determined by the function to convey the past using a lot of documentary material. She answers what it means for her generation to be a German, who feels guilty about the events of the 20th century at home and abroad.

The Hlučín Region, which today forms part of the Czech Republic, is a region whose name was used in modern times and for the first time in connection with its annexation to the Czechoslovak Republic in 1920. The course of its eventful history, which was determined by various power interests, was significantly influenced over the centuries by the coexistence of the Czech/Moravian population with the German minority. The influence of the German language, culture, customs and manners is reflected in political and social coexistence as well as, among other things. in the regional folk songs. The folk songs in the Hultčín region were collected by a number of collectors of oral tradition. The German-written folk song collection Dreiunddreißig Lieder aus Hultschin. Mährische Volkslieder were compiled by the writer August Scholtis.
