In 1981, we reported a case of complete absence of C3 in an aborigine (Atayal tribe) girl in Taiwan. Since then, serum C3 level and allotypes have been evaluated in 1,372 Atayal people. The incidence of C3 deficient heterozygote was 15.7%. All the C3 allotype was C3S. The gene frequency was 1. The Atyayal population seems more akin to Mongol populations than to Caucasians.
