Patient selection criteria are presented for three clinical trials using low-dose Interleukin-2 (IL-2) to reconstitute the immune system in HIV-infected patients. These trials are being conducted by the New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. In addition to IL-2 therapy, patients will either continue on their existing anti-HIV treatment or receive other specific drug regimens, depending on the study. IL-2 appears to have few side effects and does not seem to stimulate viral replication. IL-2 may also provide certain benefits to the immune system.

D. Tutu
Archbishop Desmond Tutu spoke at the United Nations about AIDS in the world community, and the enormity of the statistics, especially the number of cases in Africa. He put a voice and a face on the suffering of people so they are recognized as human beings, and not as statistics. Recognizing that the price of treatment is too high for developing nations, Tutu urged other nations to direct some of their defense funds toward saving lives. He advocated for safer sex and the need to control the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. His underlying message was to understand the impact that individuals can make to help each other.
