The radical increase in consumption of acidic (sour) candies amongst children and teenagers is considered a significant public health concern. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the erosive potential of sour candy in comparison with their regular counterparts at different exposure times. Sixteen prepared tooth samples were randomly assigned into four groups, namely: sour candy (n=8), regular candy (n=8); each of these was prepared to have protected (unexposed) and exposed surfaces in respective candy solutions for 15 min and 2 h (n=4). An Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface roughness (Ra) between the exposed and unexposed enamel surfaces for each sample group. The mean Ra measured was used for statistical analysis whilst the elemental loss was assessed using Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDX). The findings showed that sour candy significantly eroded the exposed enamel samples (P<0.01). Overall, the samples exposed to the sour candy for 2 h had the highest eroded Ra values. The study suggests that frequent and long-time consumption of sour candies may pose a negative impact on the tooth as they are found to be highly erosive. Key words: Candy; erosion, tooth enamel, sour candy.

There have been many studies on the practice of maintaining dental health. Although most people currently use a toothbrush to maintain the cleanliness of mouth, specific populations still used miswak as an alternative tool for oral health care. This study was designed to answer the future challenges of use of miswak as a tool to maintain oral health according to modern sciences. The history, features, function, modernization, and method in miswak were discussed in this article. The effect of miswak on periodontal health and antimicrobial has also been explained thoroughly in this article. Thus, miswak can be said to be a natural source of material that has many benefits in the improvement of oral health. The miswak extract has been modified and added in toothpaste, mouthwash, endodontic irrigation treatment, and for testing DNA. The miswak is used widely as a tool for brushing teeth and is like or better than a standard toothbrush. Key words: Miswak, Salvadora persica, chewing stick, siwak

The aim of this study is to present the importance of interdisciplinary treatment approaches for the patients with clefts. In this study, the treatment of four patients with cleft lip and palate were presented. After the completion of fixed orthodontic treatment, proper overjet and overbite relationships were achieved and to obtain the esthetic and functional results, two of the patients had prosthodontic treatment (one of them has removable appliance and another has fixed partial denture). Two of the patients had composite restoration on lateral incisors. Patients with cleft lip and palate require interdisciplinary treatment approaches. Functional occlusion and good dental esthetics can be achieved with a team approach, well-established diagnosis and correct treatment plan. Key words: Cleft lip and palate, interdisciplinary treatment, esthetic, function.

The aim of this feasibility study was to evaluate the in vitro remineralization effects of four dentifrice systems using microhardness and fluoride uptake analyses. In vitro testing for the potential remineralization of the white-spot lesions in bovine and human enamel was performed using a 10-day pH cycling model. The study involved the following NaF silica-based dentifrices: 1) placebo (0 ppm F), 2) 500 ppm F, 3) 1150 ppm F, and 4) 500 ppm F plus functionalized tricalcium phosphate (fTCP). Each day consisted of four two-minute treatments, one four-hour acid challenge (pH = 5.0), and immersion in artificial saliva (pH = 7.0) between these events. After cycling, specimens were analyzed for surface microhardness (SMH), enamel fluoride uptake (EFU), and cross-sectional microhardness (CSM). Statistical analyses revealed significant differences (ANOVA, LSD, p<0.05) among the four groups, with the placebo and 500 ppm F dentifrices providing significantly less remineralization relative to the 1150 ppm F and 500 ppm F plus fTCP dentifrices. Notably, while CSM measurements for both enamel types generated similar profiles for the four groups, SMH and EFU revealed human enamel was more sensitive to the 500 ppm F dentifrice groups compared to bovine enamel. This apparent sensitivity may be due to the inherent structural differences between the two substrates.
