European users and distributors of ‘American-strength’ encryption software could find themselves the subjects of police investigation as early as next year if the US Commerce Department has its way. Commerce Undersecretary Bill Reinsch warned that stopping the spread of long key coding software is high in his department's list of priorities and that moves are already being made to line up international enforcement of American export regulations.

The security aspects of more than 50 different smartcard-based security systems have been investigated by the Evaluation Centre. These investigations comprise physical security aspects (the ‘silicon’), logical security aspects (card operating systems) and organizational measures (e.g. transport, initialization).
