Composite gear trains can be described and defined by a series of index numbers. Inversions of these gear trains are examined and bounds on the index numbers are deduced. A table of index numbers is developed for gear trains providing up to sixteen output speeds; these trains include those of most practical interest.
A method is described for predicting a suitable design region, and a design criterion based on the maximum value of speed progression ratio is proposed as a means of synthesizing the most suitable gear trains from a large number of candidate systems.

The paper presents a derivation of the equation of kinematics of the steering linkage trapezium considered as a spatial four-bar linkage. The possibility of the ball-and-socket joints being replaced by simple turning pivots in either the presence (the ideal case) or absence (the real mechanism) of symmetry in the elements of the steering linkage is proved. It is assumed that the small errors in the dimensions of the trapezium might be compensated by the allowable clearances in the tie-rod joints. The sequential computational techniques suitable for the high speed digital computer are presented.

A special class of linkage is described that demonstrates one of the enormous number of ways of obtaining dwell motion from simple spatial linkages. This (Revolute)-(Revolute)-(Spherical)-(Cylindrical) linkage can be dimensioned to give four symmetrically disposed dwell configurations in a single cycle of operations.

In a discussion of Soni's paper[1] a geometric way has been proposed in deriving the cognate six-bar mechanisms as found by Soni. Moreover, it is proved that the curves produced by the six-bar mechanisms of the considered type and structure are ordinary four-bar coupler-curves of degree six and genus one.

A chain drive incorporating an eccentric driving sprocket and a concentric driven sprocket is analysed with regard to the output-to-input kinematical relationships and the feasibility of the satisfactory jockeying of the chain on the return span. The output motion is found to have only a low level of harmonic impurity when the input is of constant velocity.
Three methods of jockeying are considered and all are shown to be feasible. Mathematical expressions are derived for the optimum values of the jockey parameters and the relative characteristics are summarised in a table.
