In California, the well known do-it-yourself retailer Lowe’s is continuing its policy of ‘improving the home improvement’, courtesy of a new PV installation at its West Hills store in Los Angeles. PV has been much in the news of late — as you can see from any online news source, renewable energy is a hot topic deserving its own newsfeed. Luckily for us in the conventional print media, the majority of such feeds are ‘dumb’. Daily — and indiscriminately — they will retrieve for you several screens worth of items to wade through until you find the few that interest you. All too often these are also short-lived. So we think that the print medium has not had its day just yet.

Previously this newsletter has reviewed progress in the various fields of the PV industry by the type of materials. In the last issue it was the turn of one of the newer semiconductor material systems, the alloy silicon-germanium (SiGe). Attention this time turns to a much longer-established materials family, the II-VI compound semiconductors. These include the oxides, sulfides, selenides and tellurides of cadmium, zinc and mercury in the form of complex multi-layer, multi-element compound structures.
