Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) offers a significant diagnostic challenge to the primary health care practitioner. It is a common complaint with multiple risk factors and the potential for serious or fatal complications, yet an estimated 80% of DVTs are clinically asymptomatic. A further challenge, particularly to physical specialists, is that the 20% that do present with symptoms can mimic musculoskeletal pain.
This case outlines the presentation of a young female patient who presented with a history of posterior calf pain and of investigation for DVT. She was treated with apparent success, yet died shortly afterward from a pulmonary embolism, the commonest complication from a DVT. The diagnostic and investigative considerations are discussed along with risk factors for this condition.

An elderly gentleman with chronic neck pain presented with several relative contraindications to chiroprattic treatment, including hypertension and previous cancer. The patient was treated for one month using post-isometric muscle relaxation methods prior to low force chiropractic adjustment of the spine. One month after starting treatment, cervical lateral flexion and rotation increased between 200% and 300% and the neck disability index improved from moderate disability to mild disability. These improvements were largely maintained at three- and six- month follow-up visits, and were associated with improvements in the physical functioning and social functioning components of the medical outcomes short form 36 (SF 36) questionnaire. This conservative approach may prove useful for treating the ageing cervical spine.

Osteoid osteoma is a benign skeletal neoplasm characterised by nocturnal pain that is relieved dramatically by salicylates. Brodie's abscess is the main differential diagnosis for osteoid osteoma, presenting with both clinical and radiological similarities. This report describes a 19-year-old female with a nine-year history of knee pain. Early investigations included plain radiographs, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and arthroscopy, which were all identified as normal. The plain radiographs, MRI and Computed Tomography findings are discussed in relation to osteoid osteoma and Brodie's abscess and the need for diagnostic confirmation by biopsy.
