We propose a regularization for reduced-order models (ROMs) of the quasi-geostrophic equations (QGE) to increase accuracy when the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) modes retained to construct the reduced basis are insufficient to describe the system dynamics. Our regularization is based on the so-called BV-α model, which modifies the nonlinear term in the QGE and adds a linear differential filter for the vorticity. To show the effectiveness of the BV-α model for ROM closure, we compare the results computed by a POD-Galerkin ROM with and without regularization for the classical double-gyre wind forcing benchmark. Our numerical results show that the solution computed by the regularized ROM is more accurate, even when the retained POD modes account for a small percentage of the eigenvalue energy. Additionally, we show that, although computationally more expensive than the ROM with no regularization, the regularized ROM is still a competitive alternative to full-order simulations of the QGE.

. This study aims to explore the potential use of electro-oxidation (EO) as a decentralized wastewater treatment method. The simulated wastewater comprising bacterial consortium was treatedbyemployingmixedmetaloxide(MMO).Inparticular,alab-scalebatchelectrooxidationreac-tor was used at di ff erent operating parameters including NaCl dose ( n ), current density ( j ), and treat-ment time ( t ) in order to optimize the process using response surface methodology. The e ffi ciency of the treatment process was evaluated in terms of % inactivation and energy consumption which were found to be 99.2% and 0.42 kWh/m 3 , respectively. Under optimal conditions, it was found that the proposed technique’s overall operating cost was 0.189 $/m 3 taking into consideration the electrical energy consumed and cost of electrodes.

In this work, we develop a posteriori error control for a generalized Boussinesq model in which thermal conductivity and viscosity are temperature-dependent. Therein, the stationary Navier–Stokes equations are coupled with a stationary heat equation. The coupled problem is modeled and solved in a monolithic fashion. The focus is on multigoal-oriented error estimation with the dual-weighted residual method in which an adjoint problem is utilized to obtain sensitivity measures with respect to several goal functionals. The error localization is achieved with the help of a partition-of-unity in a weak formulation, which is specifically convenient for coupled problems as we have at hand. The error indicators are used to employ adaptive algorithms, which are substantiated with several numerical tests such as one benchmark and two further experiments that are motivated from laser material processing. Therein, error reductions and effectivity indices are consulted to establish the robustness and efficiency of our framework.

In this work we address the reduction of face degrees of freedom (DOFs) for discrete elasticity complexes. Specifically, using serendipity techniques, we develop a reduced version of a recently introduced two-dimensional complex arising from traces of the three-dimensional elasticity complex. The keystone of the reduction process is a new estimate of symmetric tensor-valued polynomial fields in terms of boundary values, completed with suitable projections of internal values for higher degrees. We prove an extensive set of new results for the original complex and show that the reduced complex has the same homological and analytical properties as the original one. This paper also contains an appendix with proofs of general Poincaré–Korn-type inequalities for hybrid fields.
