The study aims to ascertain whether various forms of learning impact tertiary students' ability to learn the English language. The VARK questionnaire has been chosen as the model for this research (VARK stands for Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic sensory models used for information acquisition). 100 first-year university students were selected as the respondent in this study. They were required to complete the VARK questionnaire at the start of the study, and the data were analyzed using SPSS. Furthermore, to determine whether the various learning styles correlate with the student's grades throughout the entire course session, the study examined the final results of the students' English examination results. According to the data, students who preferred reading and writing learning styles performed better than those who chose the other. In conclusion, the data gathered are helpful for tertiary educators in the future.

The objectives of this study were to find out the types and factors of code-switching and code-mixing done by the teachers in the teaching process and to reveal why teachers switched and mixed the utterances. It was conducted using a descriptive qualitative research method. The objects of this study were Mathematics, Science and English teachers at Rainbow School of Joy in Medan. The data were collected by video recording the teachers' utterances during the learning to find out types and factors of code-switching and code-mixing and by interviewing the teachers to reveal why they switched and mixed the codes. Data were analysed by using Cohen's technique (2018). The study's findings showed the teachers' most frequent types of code-switching were inter-sentential. The total is 46 types with a percentage of 18%. The most frequent types of code mixing were insertion (word phrase). The accommodation is 49 types, with a rate of 19%. The most frequent factor of the teachers doing the code-switching and mixing was talking about a particular topic. The total is 52, with a percentage of 21%. Finally, the most frequent reason was the genre. The accommodation is 12, with a rate of 27.2%.

This research aims to find an answer to the ongoing debate about the effectiveness of online learning. In this study, students’ academic performance based on continuous assessments and examination results were the indicator of effectiveness in learning. Descriptive analysis was used to compare students’ academic performance in grade point average (GPA) calculation in traditional face-to-face assessments and online assessments. Researchers also interested to find out about the attitudes of students and lecturers towards assessments in these two modes. Hence, a set of questionnaire is prepared with questions related to user’s experience, perceptions and preference while comparing traditional face-to-face assessments and online assessments. Findings from this study showed better academic performance in grade point average calculation where online assessments were conducted. Students’ responses in the questionnaire indicated online assessments are easier to do and easier to score; online assessments encourage independent learning and majority prefer online assessments. However, lecturers’ responses in the questionnaire indicated otherwise; higher percentages of lecturers preferred traditional face-to-face assessments to online assessments. From lecturers’ point of view, the traditional face-to-face assessments are fairer and less opportunity for cheating, hence, they are more confident in students’ answers and the results would reflect more accurately students’ actual learning achieved. This study concluded that online platform is an effective tool of learning and is well received and preferred among students.

The city of Medan is the third-largest city in Indonesia and has historical buildings or heritage that can be revitalized as a cultural heritage with tourism potential that can be developed. However, until now, the colonial heritage buildings have been destroyed up to 70%. This research method uses a tourism anthropology approach with a qualitative research type that focuses on tourist destinations. The research location is a heritage area, a colonial heritage building in the Merdeka Square segment, Maimoon segment, Benteng segment, Youth segment, Polonia segment, and Sambu segment. The study results reveal that Medan has a heritage in the form of historic buildings that have the potential to be developed and represent the identity of the city of Medan. The potential for tourism development can be carried out in 3 (three) potential areas, namely: 1) The youth segment, which includes Gedung Juang 45, which currently functions as the Sumatran Money Museum, Tip Top Restaurant, and Tjong A Fie Mansion. 2) the Maimoon segment, which includes: Maimoon Palace and the Great Mosque. 3) The Merdeka Square segment includes City Hall, which currently functions as the Grand City Hall, Hotel De Boer (currently called Grand Inna Hotel), and the London Sumatra building. Through urban tourism based on urban heritage tourism, tourists can be invited to appreciate and interpret the objects observed. It serves as education and recreation for the community. This activity is also a means of preserving the wealth and identity of the city of Medan.
