Multigenerational families, shaped by fundamental phenomena of today’s world like human longevity and the restructuring of production, unite generational actors in new socio-affective relationships. Firstly, and contrary to the somewhat stereotyped contemporary image, uncommon figures such as the centenarians are generally lucid and in good or reasonable bodily health. Whatever the state of their physical health, though, they need affection like anyone else, as well as practical day-to-day support. Their children may come together to enable this care, but generally the support is provided by a daughter, fulfilling the classic female social role of caregiver. These daughters, whether elderly themselves or mature, represent the pivotal or intermediary generation, the second great player in these multigenerational families, who also provide support to the younger generations, including children and grandchildren. Such support extends to financial assistance, required by those mainly younger family members who are unemployed or only precariously employed, as well as by those who experience new family situations, such as separations and returning to home, generally the maternal home. This is the panorama that I propose to analyze, based on research data.

El tema de la infancia, aunque convoca desde multiples epocas y dimensiones, no siempre lo hace desde una perspectiva que la integre, respete y valore en si misma. Las formas de entender y pensar la infancia; de actuar con ella y para ella requieren de reflexion profunda, de analisis y trasformaciones que garanticen una cultura reconocedora y validadora de la misma. Este estudio trata sobre la infancia, sobre como es pensada y configurada. Sobre como co-existe en la actualidad chilena y probablemente en buena parte del mundo.

This work presents some advances from a doctoral research in progress whose objective is to analyse meanings, timmings and paths of transition to adulthood from two different generations in Mexico City. Defining generation as a group that shares same events and experiences, in this work two generations have been located from their same experiences among their transition to adulthood. The first one grew between the decades 1960 and 1970 in Mexico City under the following context: an import substitution economic model that prompted the creation of jobs and the inclusión of large population strips to urban labor markets; the grew of urbanization in Mexico due to migratory flows, specially rural-urban flows; consolidation and growth of urban middle class; and the growth and expansion of educational system. On the other hand, second generation made its transition during the 1990s, and first years of the 2000s, under different conditions such as: changes in economic model, wich brought consecuences such as flexbilization and precariousness in labor markets; the participation in globalization process; the increase in inequalities between social classes and their unequal inclusion at labor markets and education as a social mobility mechanism; changes in meanings and expectations related to transition to adulthood; and increase in complexity in this process compared to the first generation. The main question seeks to know the imapct of these different contexts in the transition to adulthood between both generations. For it, both contexts will be compared. Then, the most significant changes between generations will be presented.
