Supporting Place/Space Based Patterns of Citywide Mobile Learning through Multi-Agent Framework
B. Khan, M. Matskin
There are numerous possible patterns consisting of learners, technological components and physical locations (i.e. Spaces) which can be identified in the context of citywide mobile learning (CML). By patterns, we mean to refer to the different ways in which learners are associated with the Spaces where the learning occurs, with technology that supports learning and among the learners themselves. Envisioning the entire set of possible scenarios, which can exist in the citywide context and designing to support them is not only difficult, but also practically impossible. Therefore, there is a need to condense and generalize all the numerous possible scenarios of CML into few core patterns, which can be use as basic building blocks to construct and support more complex CML scenarios. A regular trend in the currently existing literature is to consider only one or two use-cases while neglecting others. In this paper we address this problem by presenting six general patterns instead of use-cases that can exist in citywide context. These patterns take into account three fundamental aspects of CML, (1) learner, (2) Place/Space and (3) the technological components needed to support CML.

Visual Interactive and Location Activated Mobile Learning
Yiqun Li, Aiyuan Guo, J. Lee, Yan Gao, Y. L. Ling
In this paper we proposed an application on smart phones for interactive mobile learning. Image recognition technology is used to link physical objects seen through the camera to relevant information. Through the built-in camera on the smart phone, visual interactive learning can be realized. With the GPS sensor, location activated learning is also possible. Combining both the camera and the GPS sensor on the phone, multimedia contents can either be activated by snapping a picture from a real world object or entering a predefined geographical area. This makes the learning process more interesting and intuitive. A web portal is developed for teachers to create the learning trails for different learning objectives. The mobile apps are also developed for iOS and Android platforms. A trial was conducted with school teachers and students and positive feedbacks are obtained.

Augmented Reality(AR) technology has made up the deficiency of current online video interaction in distance learning and met the needs of visualization of abstract knowledge for learners as well as the needs of interactions between students and learning content. This paper proposed a one-to-many remote video learning system based on AR technology. Teachers can transmit learning content to remote students. The system shields the complexity of AR technology, it just need to a desktop, laptop or mobile device with camera connected to the network. Experiment shows the novel remote video system help learners to build knowledge.

A New Type of Learning Experience in Nomadic Inquiry: Use of Zydeco in the Science Center
Wan-Tzu Lo, Ibrahim Delen, Clara Cahill, A. Kuhn, S. Schmoll, C. Quintana
Zydeco is a mobile and web based system that allows students to collect and annotate multi-modal data. With the support of Zydeco, students are expected to connect their learning experiences across different learning settings. In this case study, we shadowed four 7th grade students with different achievement levels from a science class and observed how they utilized Zydeco in a science center. We analyzed their data collected with Zydeco and their final project posters to explain how students connect learning experiences in nomadic inquiry.

Development of a Web 2.0-based Ubiquitous Learning Platform for Schoolyard Plant Identification

The rapid progress of wireless communication, sensing, and mobile technologies has enabled students to learn in an environment that combines learning resources from both the real world and the digital world. It can be viewed as a new learning style which has been called context-aware ubiquitous learning. Most of context-aware ubiquitous learning systems employ expensive sensing technologies, such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, to detect real-world learning behaviors of students and provide personalized learning guidance accordingly. In this paper, we use QR (Quick Response) code, a low cost technology that is available in smart phones, for detecting students' real-world learning status. Moreover, a Web 2.0 technology is employed to enable students to build the learning material database collaboratively.

AccelPen: Detecting Writing Action with Pen Acceleration Toward Learning Support Systems AccelPen:
Hironori Egi, S. Ozawa
This paper describes grasping a state of students and visualizing it with sensors that detect their writing action. The style of studying is being diversified with the spread of utilizing distance education and e-learning systems. Character of students like their interest and preference is also being diversified. With these reasons, it is getting difficult for a teacher to understand status of students objectively in a large classroom. We introduce measuring acceleration of a pen with wireless sensors and establish the method to detect the kinds of their behavior while studying. The result of this research can be applied to designing various teaching support systems.

This study was conducted to compare the typing performance of subjects inputting random alphabet characters using software keyboards on touchpanel mobile devices and hardware keyboards (subjects n=67, 31.0 ± 11.1 years of age) Hardware keyboards showed significantly better performance for input speeds, error rates, and subjective rate of usability. As a result, even those who showed slow input spends using hardware keyboards, did not show much slower speeds in using software.

CAMLES: An Adaptive Mobile Learning System to Assist Student in Language Learning CAMLES:辅助学生语言学习的自适应移动学习系统
V. A. Nguyen, Van Cong Pham
This paper represents a personalized context-aware mobile learning architecture for supporting student to learn English as foreign language in order to prepare for TOEFL test. We consider how to apply open learner modeling techniques to adapt contents for different learners based on context which includes location, amount of time to learn, the manner as well as learner's knowledge in learning progress. Through negotiation with system, the editable learner model will be updated to support adaptive engine to select adaptive contents meeting learner's demands. Empirical testing results for students who used application prototype indicate that interaction user modeling is helpful support learner to learn adaptive materials.

mbclick - An Electronic Voting System that Returns Individual Feedback
Geoff Rubner
mbclick is a new electronic voting system that emphasizes the return of individual feedback. It uses students' own mobile phones, and works with both 'smart' and ordinary types. It is web-based, thereby removing the need to install any dedicated application software to make it work. It is easy to learn and use, and integrates with Microsoft PowerPoint. mbclick does away with the need to purchase and distribute traditional handheld clickers, freeing the institution and the teacher from the associated overheads. The system has been successfully piloted and tested at the University of Manchester.
