Deforestation in the Amazon is (or should be) one of the most important topics in the political debate of the Brazilian elections , this year 2022. The subject increasingly worries the country's public opinion and the international media. In this post, we will analyze the current situation of fires and deforestation in Brazilian biomes, with emphasis on the Amazon, as well as its relationship with the climate change process.

The PlanetScope constellation continues to break paradigms in Remote Sensing . The System allows the daily monitoring of the entire Planet, from daily images of high spatial resolution (1 to 5 meters). Planet operates with a constellation of more than 200 nanosatellites. Together, these devices provide a dataset of Earth observation images unprecedented in history . It's a unique combination of coverage, frequency and resolution.

The PlanetScope nanosatellite constellation has revolutionized the way we observe the Earth, by scanning each pole of the Planet every 90 minutes. In this post, you will learn about the technological feat achieved by Planet , when it launched its first nanosatellites, in 2016, which today are part of a constellation that captures all the dynamics of the Earth, daily. Since 2020, Brazil has been able to rely on this revolutionary technology for environmental monitoring , by having access to the PlanetScope system. It is a constellation formed by more than 200 nanosatellites, generating high spatial resolution images, with daily coverage capacity, of the entire national territory.

World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought was celebrated last Friday, June 17th. In this post, we will explain the 5 points you need to know to understand the current challenges for mapping degraded areas and combating desertification in the Brazilian semiarid region. We will also address recent advances in satellite monitoring of desertification, using revolutionary mapping technology . The technology makes it possible to extract crucial information for planning actions to combat desertification, using remote sensing through a Geographic Information System (GIS). Next, check out the 5 points you need to know to understand desertification in Brazil.

For 50 years, Landsat satellites have been monitoring changes on the Earth's surface. The first was launched by the United States in July 1972. By gathering data from the Landsat program and other satellites , researchers can reconstruct historical patterns of landscape change and predict trends. With Landsat data, it is possible to monitor forest cover, drought situations , forest fire damage and other types of land use change. Uma das aplicações dos dados do Landsat é para analisar a mudança na vazão dos rios, em situações de alterações na bacia hidrográfica, pelo impacto da construção de grandes represas.

The Satellite Image Analysis and Processing Laboratory ( Lapis ) has launched a new monitoring product, based on satellite data . It is the map of the difference in drought severity areas, in plantation areas, in Brazilian regions. The product is generated from the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The map was processed in QGIS software , with data from the Meteosat-11 satellite , which has a spatial resolution of 3 km.

A study coordinated by the MapBiomas project highlighted changes in land use and cover in the Caatinga in the period 1985-2020. To carry out the study, around 150,000 images from Landsat satellites were analyzed , with a resolution of 30 meters, available over a period of 35 years. Annual information was collected on twenty-five land use and land cover classes in the biome. In this post, we will highlight the main results of the study, which mapped the changes in the land cover of the Caatinga , in the last decades.

Caatinga: one of the least protected biomes in Brazil 卡廷加:巴西最不受保护的生物群落之一

The Caatinga is a large dry forest ecosystem that covers about 11% of the Brazilian territory. Botanically, it is considered the only uniquely Brazilian biome. It was the agronomist and ecologist from Pernambuco João Vasconcelos Sobrinho (1908-1989) who first proved that the biological heritage of the Caatinga, in addition to being very rich, is unique on the planet . In his honor, the date of April 28 is dedicated to the National Day of the Caatinga, since 2003. In addition to commemorating this date, the Caatinga deserves another warning about its current state of conservation and the urgency of systematic actions to preserve the biome.
