We are so much preoccupied nowadays with the problems of the present and the future, that our debt to the past is sometimes apt to be overlooked. We are, in fact, inclined to take our present state of knowledge for granted, and when we think of the generations which have preceded our own, we are apt to do so with a sense of superiority and a pity for their mistakes, rather than with a sense of humility and of admiration for their achievement. (Weir, 1990)

T h e idea of using sound as the primary m o d e of st imulation to teach deaf chi ldren probably seems contrdictory to some. There is, nevertheless, m o u n t i n g evidence of the efficacy of this approach . To unde r s t and what is m e a n t by the te rm "auditory learning" as appl ied to a child with p ro found hear ing impai rment , we n e e d to consider the basic proper t ies of the stimulus, that is, "sound" itself. Some of the concepts relative to sound, its transmission, the user, a n d the problems associated with auditory learning are listed below. These are features that must be considered whenever one a t tempts to establish an auditory p rog ram for a child with severe or profound hea r ing loss.

Use of Financial Resources for the Hearing Impaired
Pub Date : 1997-08-01 DOI: 10.1055/s-0028-1083027
M. Downs
The cost of hear ing loss in chi ldren is an eno rmous b u r d e n to society. Yet there are well-known means by which the b u r d e n can be reduced if only the means were imp lemented . T h e costs to society, and to the individual families, are well recognized, bu t little action is taking place to use the means to decrease this drain. For state governments to initiate programs that will reduce the financial b u r d e n of hear ing loss and deafness, they must be aware of the following: first, the actual costs to the family and to the state from hear ing loss; and second, the steps that can be taken to relieve those costs.
