SUMMARY This essay is a direct response to Archbishop Harry J. Flynn's keynote at the Symposium “Trusting the Clergy: The churches and communities come to grips with sexual misconduct.” It focuses on the contradiction between an institutional protection agenda and a justice-making agenda as seen in response to sexual abuse by Catholic priests.

SUMMARY This essay is a direct response to the keynote by Fr. Cozzens at the Symposium “Trusting the Clergy: The churches and communities come to grips with sexual misconduct,” discussing the emphasis in recent responses by dioceses which seems to focus on avoiding legal liability and offering an ethical analysis of sexual abuse by clergy.

SUMMARY After examining the historic and continued experience of homophobia espoused by catechetical doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church, this article invites people who have been deeply wounded by the clergy sexual misconduct scandal to actively use spirituality to reframe their relationship with the Church. The Buddhist notion of crisis, which contains both danger and opportunity, is one of a series of lenses through which this conversation is contextualized.
