This paper attempts a definition of service derived by unifying its usage in practice. In doing so it identifies participant's perspective as separate from actual different usages. Using this as an aid, the paper analyses the criteria applied in the use of service and considers how these can be aligned to derive commonality underlying the usage. Also included is a brief outline of the way in which a service-oriented architecture following such a model would affect the practice and process of developing large-scale, distributed software systems.

The IP traceback technique detects sources of attack nodes and the paths traversed by anonymous DDoS (distributed denial of service) flows with spoofed source addresses. We propose a hierarchical IP traceback architecture, which decomposes the Internet-wide traceback procedure into inter-domain traceback and intradomain traceback. Our proposed method is different from existing approaches in that our method is independent from a single IP traceback mechanism, and domain decomposition is based on existing operational models of the Internet. Moreover, it has the capability of being used for not only the IPv4 network, but also the IPv6 network.

In the early 1980s many medical expert systems were developed with a knowledge base acquired from medical experts, and their performance was almost as good as domain experts. However they weren't used frequently mainly due to the poor user interface and poor learning of new knowledge. However, solutions for these two problems began to be introduced in the 1990s. For the latter problem, machine learning methods have provided several solutions, and for the former problem, the rapid progress of Web technologies enables us to implement a good user interface. Furthermore, recent advances in computer resources strengthen these two solutions. We focus on the interface problem. Recent advances in Web technologies were used for an efficient interface of medical expert systems. The system was put on the Internet to provide an intelligent decision support in telemedicine and is now being evaluated by regional medical home doctors. The results show that such an Internet-based medical decision support enables home doctors to take rapid action.

This paper considers satellite unidirectional links having a large number of nodes and discusses the PIM-SM configuration on these links if there is no separate multicast routing information base. Looking closely at the PIM-SM specification documents, we propose a PIM-SM configuration that enables multicast traffic to flow on unidirectional links. We also discuss the scalability of PIM-SM on satellite unidirectional links. We expect that the join/prune message suppression strategy is an important element for scaling PIM-SM on these links.

Inter-AS routing is difficult to control since advertised inter-AS routing information changes as it spreads through ASs that are managed based on each policy. For operating the Internet reliably as we intend, we propose a flexible and autonomous policy control environment called AISLE. AISLE uses cooperative actions among distributed agents to know and control inter-AS routing behavior. This paper describes the AISLE model and architecture that enable policy control at the inter-AS level.

A method called 6to4 enables separate IPv6 sites to connect to the IPv6 Internet via a 6to4 relay router without an explicit IPv6 over IPv4 tunnel setup. There are currently about ten open 6to4 relay routers worldwide but none of these had been installed in Japan. We therefore decided to evaluate 6to4 technology and set ourselves the goal of improving 6to4 operation within Japan. To accomplish this, in March 2002, we installed an open 6to4 relay router within Japan with the cooperation of the WIDE Project and started this experiment. This paper describes our experiment and reports statistical information acquired in operation as well as problems during operation.

The Internet has grown rapidly in China since 1995. The number of Internet users in China has doubled nearly every six months since, reaching 46 million up to now. Consequently, a huge volume of IP addresses is needed and imperative. On the other hand, mobile communication has been popularized in China with remarkable high speed. There are about 200 million mobile users, who would be mobile IP users potentially. Therefore, IPv6 would be a key technology and an important chance for China with a big population to obtain more needed IP addresses, and to develop applications based on mobile IP. In this paper the significance of IPv6 for China and the reason for a huge potential IT market are explained. Several IPv6 projects from 1998 to the present are introduced. The achievements of IPv6 development including test-beds, services and research are described.

With the spread of IPv6 technology, we can use various IPv6 servers such as WWW and mail. Therefore, a network administrator should measure both IPv6 and IPv4 network and server. We discuss existing measurement tools to use in an IPv6 environment, considering WWW that is the most important service on the Internet. We express a new benchmark system that can handle IPv6 and IPv4 called ANMA. We confirm that ANMA can send requests correctly by both protocol stacks.

The Internet has become a critical and dependable communication infrastructure in many countries. In Asia, there is still strong demand for Internet development, because only a limited number of people can use the Internet without difficulties. Asian Internet Interconnection Initiatives (AI3) was established in 1995 by the WIDE Project, aiming at developing technologies for accelerating Internet development in Asia. Since 1995, the project has been constructing its own testbed network using satellite communication systems and this is the only international R&D network based on a satellite communication system. Currently this network connects 17 member sites in 10 countries. Throughout our activity, technologies and engineering have been developed such as our infrastructure which uses a Ku band satellite transponder for Internet applications, UDL routing for an asymmetric one way link to maximize available bandwidth from hub station to member sites, and a series of experiments such as challenges for distance education to confirm usability of our technology have been conducted. We are facing new issues raised such as expansion to use terrestrial links and industrialization of our developed technologies for sustainable services. In order to solve these issues, several new activities have been newly launched in our AI3 project. We overview our achievement in the AI3 project, and discuss newly raised issues.

As networking trends move toward ubiquitous structuring schemes, the problem of security has taken on an increasingly important role. As a result, we must look to new security paradigms that address the new problems associated with these networks. This paper is a summary of research in progress on the Wintermute Project at Oregon State University, which was created to investigate security for ubiquitous networking schemes.
