Abstract. This research aims to compare power aspects portrayed by the main character in The Hunger Games and Divergent novels and see the similarities and differences between those two novels. The object of this research is Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games and Veronica Roth’s Divergent Novels. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative as the method of the study. The researcher used Karlberg's (2005) theory to conduct this research. The researcher classified the characteristic of power into Power as Domination (there are 5 types) and Power as Capacity (there are 4 types) to get the data. The other elements that help the researcher easier to collect the data that can be compared are using the novel's intrinsic elements. The result shows Katniss (The Hunger Games) and Tris (Divergent) as the main character, they have power on some points. Some points of the power from those novels have similar portrayals such as Power as Domination in Position, Power as Domination in Knowledge, Power as Domination in Experience, Power as Domination in Gender, Power as Capacity in Anger, Power as Capacity in Bravery, and Power as Capacity in Disappointed. Few points show if those two books have different portrayals, such as the point of Power as Domination in Age and Power as Capacity in Worrying. So, based on the research and the result shown, The Hunger Games and Divergent are thought of as the same novels because some power portrayals from those novels are similar.Abstract. 研究者使用Karlberg(2005)的理论来进行这项研究。研究者将权力的特征分为power as Domination(有5种类型)和power as Capacity(有4种类型)来得到数据。 研究者使用Karlberg(2005)的理论来进行这项研究。研究者将权力的特征分为power as Domination(有5种类型)和power as Capacity(有4种类型)来得到数据。

The present study investigates the relationship between students’ English language proficiency and their logical reasoning reflected by their performance in applying spreadsheet program. Since logical thinking is the basis of both using English language for communication and operating Microsoft Excel program, students can very likely show similar success in their performance while learning these two skills. The subjects were 67 students enrolled at a secretarial college in Surabaya, Indonesia. Data were collected from the students scores of TOEIC international test and Computer II course focusing on Microsoft Excel. Means of the scores were calculated and the sets of data were analyzed to see if there was a significant correlation between them. The results showed that the students’ English proficiency correlated significantly with their academic performance in computer. It can then be concluded that students with better logical thinking ability seem to be more successful in learning English as a foreign language.

Pub Date : 2021-09-06 DOI: 10.26877/allure.v1i1.9269
Dr. Mee Jay A. Domingo, Harvey John Tolentino Aguillon
In the academe, stakeholders are starting to acknowledge the impact of social media in the teaching and learning process. Aware of this, the researchers conducted this study to determine the role of social media in the language learning experiences of students. Specifically, it identified the social media profile of the students and the platforms’ perceived use and advantages to vocabulary development. In realizing its objectives, the study employed a descriptive research design that involved 83 university students from a state university in the Philippines. Respondents answered an online survey questionnaire, which was tried out first to potential respondents before its actual use. The researchers used descriptive statistics to make sense of the data gathered. Results show that the students have high social media engagement as manifested by the number of social media accounts that they created for themselves (the majority have two or more accounts) and the number of hours that they spend a day online (majority are online for at least three hours a day). All the respondents use Facebook.com, making it the most commonly used social media platform among them. In addition, the study found that students perceive social media as contributory and effective applications for the enhancement of language and vocabulary skills due to the media’s accessibility, universality, ease of use, multimodality, general appeal, and its role in lowering communication anxieties. With these findings, educators are encouraged to explore the possibility of using social media platforms, preferably Facebook, as instructional media, specifically for the teaching of vocabulary.

This research is entitled Semiotics Analysis on Historical Memes in Eno Bening’s Tweet Replies. The study concerns with all the way the researchers explore the meaning of representamen/signs on either non-verbal and verbal data of historical memes in Eno Bening’s tweet replies. The method used in this paper is descriptive qualitative analysis where the researchers describe the meaning of the memes. The researchers also use semiotics analysis proposed by Pierce’s semiotic analysis (1994) in order to discover the interpretation of meaning implied in the memes. From the analysis, the researchers conclude that the historical memes in Eno Bening’s tweet replies mostly used to retell a story of historical events that happened in the past. Furthermore, memes are also used to criticize, give an opinion and also satirize a historical event.
