Predictive Routing in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks 移动Ad-Hoc网络中的预测路由

Predicting future state of dynamic networks has been a growing area of research in recent years. Mobile ad-hoc networks in particular are subject to frequent disconnects and topology changes as a consequence of user mobility. However, in many kinds of mobile networks, e.g. vehicular networks, mobility is not strictly random, and some prediction of node mobility is possible, which enables estimation of route stability. However, predictive techniques rely on accurate localization, which is not always available. In this paper, we examine the effect localization error as commonly encountered in practice has on a simple mobility prediction method.

A Hybrid Network Protocol for Disaster Scenarios 灾难场景下的混合网络协议

In the last decade, there has been an increase in the number of natural disasters and terrorist attacks that were massive in scale and civilian casualties. In most of these disaster situations, rescue operations have been carried out on large scale. This paper assumes a heterogeneous network disaster recovery scenario and proposes a cost effective and easy to deploy hybrid communication system to achieve rescuers’ requirements and cooperation. Designing a new protocol for hybrid network with different access protocols and with mobility and failures poses several challenges. The proposed protocol uses the Inter-Domain Messaging (IDM) framework to achieve the goal. The simulation shows the functionality of the hybrid protocol model (non-IP routing protocol), and maintains routes without the lower layer detection of link breaks. Real Time Available-Bandwidth Estimation (ABE) Algorithm Based Selection in Heterogeneous Network for WiMAX and 3G 基于实时可用带宽估计(ABE)算法的WiMAX和3G异构网络选择

The increasing demand for broadband wireless service in today's wireless communications, especially with WiMAX technology being one of the 3G standards, is causing cellular network providers to consider the integration of different heterogeneous networks. Consequently, network selection techniques play a vital role in ensuring quality of service in heterogeneous networks. In this article we have developed a network selection scheme for an integrated 3G/WiMAX heterogeneous system. The design goal is to provide the user with the best available QoS at any time. The proposed algorithm selects network on the basis of available bandwidth estimation. Analysis of heterogeneous system with 3G and WiMAX network reveal that the proposed network selection method can effectively choose the suitable network by negotiating trade-offs among network dynamic condition and multimedia service application.

Priority Scheduling for Improving Video Delivery over Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks 改进无线多媒体传感器网络视频传输的优先级调度

Using multipath routing protocols results in more efficient data transmission than single path routing protocols in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs). In this paper, we propose a new mechanism for improving video transmission over WMSN based on packet, path and queue priority scheduling over multipath routing protocol. We assume that network has high CBR (Constant Bit Rate) traffic with no video data in addition to video packets. Since, not every frame has the same effect on receptive video quality, in our mechanism we put priority over the video packets regarding their effects on the receiver video distortions. In our scheduling, condition of each routing path is studied, using control packets being transmitted periodically, and in the video source node the packets having high priority are transmitted over paths with better conditions. Also, intermediate nodes buffer (queue) is scheduled for quick and righteously transmission of video packets compared with the other packets in network. Simulation results show that our proposed scheduling improves important Quality-of-Service (QoS) metrics such as end-to-end delay and frame loss percentage for video streaming.

Contribution of Broadcast Algorithms to Reactive Ad Hoc Routing 广播算法对响应式Ad Hoc路由的贡献

Most reactive routing protocols hoc wireless networks rely on a broadcast algorithm known as flooding for route discovery. With flooding, many copies of each message are retransmitted unnecessarily resulting in a sub-optimal resource consumption. Given that mobile devices usually have limited power and computational resources, it is of the utmost importance to reduce the resource consumption of each route discovery. A number of alternatives to flooding have been presented but their impact on the performance of reactive routing protocols is not well understood. This paper compares and discusses the performance of a routing protocol for MANETs with three distinct broadcast algorithms.

Energy Efficiency of Recharging a Mobile Device 移动设备充电的能源效率

Because of losses in electricity conversion and storage only part of the energy taken from the power grid produces useful work in a battery-operated mobile device, the rest evaporates as heat. We analyze the recharging activity of a mobile phone to understand the efficiency of the different units involved (charger, EPM chipset, battery). Our measurements show that the efficiency is quite low, only about 15 % of the electricity from the power grid ends up being used for the actual computing and communication elements of the mobile phone. It seems that there is room for improvement in the recharging efficiency. However, as the consumption of electricity of a single phone is small the incentive for improvements has been weak.

Modelling Speech Quality for NB and WB SILK Codec for VoIP Applications 用于VoIP应用的NB和WB SILK编解码器的语音质量建模

In the last decade, VoIP telephony has gained a tremendous popularity. Skype is one of the most successful and popular VoIP services which has inspired a new generation of VoIP and multimedia users. SILK speech codec is the latest development by Skype and has been integrated into the current version of Skype and is expected to be incorporated into new and emerging mobile devices such as iphone and soft phones. One of the major challenges in every VoIP service is to find an easily accessible objective quality model to predict/measure the perceived speech quality or the degree of user satisfaction. In this paper, we present a regression-based model to quantify the speech quality of the wideband (WB) and narrowband (NB) SILK codec for VoIP applications. The developed model uses the network level parameter (i.e., packet loss) and the application level parameter (i.e., send bit rate) to predict the perceived voice quality in terms of the Mean Opinion Score (MOS). Subjective tests were also carried out to validate the model and good accuracy was achieved (97% for wideband and 91% for narrowband). The developed model can be easily implemented in soft phones or mobile devices to predict voice quality for SILK codec in VoIP applications and can also be used for real-time adaptation and control of VoIP applications to further explore the adaptive feature of the SILK codec in future mobile devices or softphones.

A Cloud Based Service Architecture for Personalized Media Recommendations 基于云的个性化媒体推荐服务架构

As the world becomes a highly interconnected place, there is an increasing demand for providing ubiquitous access to content and services over a wide variety of platforms and devices. There is an increasing need to provide rich, intelligent and personalized services to the user irrespective of his location or method of access. There is a need to be connected and have access to resources and services round the clock. All of the above requirements need to be fulfilled in a seamless and scalable fashion in order to support a rich user experience. The cloud computing paradigm has been proposed as the next generation infrastructure to support a highly scalable service oriented architecture to achieve these goals. Providing personalized content recommendation services that recommend content relevant to the user irrespective of his location or access device is an important step in improving user experience. In this paper we investigate the use of a context aware recommendation service based on the cloud model.

Providing personalized content recommendation services that recommend content relevant to the user irrespective of his location or access device is an important step in improving user experience. Resource Footprint of a Manycast Protocol Implementation on Multiple Mobile Platforms 多移动平台上多播协议实现的资源占用

Wireless communication is becoming the dominant form of communication and ad hoc wireless connections are posed to play a role in disaster area networks. However, research efforts on wireless ad hoc communication protocols do not pay enough attention to measurable and reproducible indications of the mobile footprint including power consumption. Protocols and applications are initially designed and studied in a simulation environment and are hard to test in in-field experiments. In this work we report a multi-platform implementation of Random-Walk Gossip, a many cast protocol designed for message dissemination in disaster areas. Our work is focused in studying the resource footprint and its impact on performance on commercially available devices. We show both how different aspects of the protocol contributes to the footprint and how this in turn affects the performance. The methodologies used here can be applied to other protocols and applications, aiding in future optimisations.

A Unified Scalable Model of User Localisation with Uncertainty Awareness for Large-scale Pervasive Environments 大规模普适环境下具有不确定性感知的用户定位统一可扩展模型

Localisation has become a standard feature in many mobile applications. Numerous techniques for both indoor and outdoor location tracking are available today, providing a diversity of ways positioning information can be delivered to a mobile application (e.g., a location-based service). Such factors as the variation of precision over time and covered areas or the difference in quality and reliability make the adoption of several techniques for one application cumbersome. This work presents an approach that models the capabilities of localisation systems and then uses this model to build a unified view on localisation, with special attention paid to uncertainty coming from different localisation conditions and its presentation to the user. We discuss technical considerations, challenges and issues of the approach and report about a user study on users' acceptance of the suggested behaviour of an application based on the approach. The results of the study showed the feasibility of the approach and revealed users' preference towards automatic but yet informed changes they experienced while using the application.
