This chapter takes a distinctive approach to the task of understanding relations between collective provision typically supplied by infrastructures and individual consumption commonly enabled by appliances. It does so by investigating a selection of critical and contentious junctions or interfaces at which multiple interests and actors meet. The sites on which we focus – one being the plugging in of electric vehicles, the other being the design and positioning of smart metering systems – provide different but complementary insights into the ongoing ‘making’ of roles and categories around which infrastructures are organised. In taking this approach we show that such distinctions are reflected and also reproduced in the design and operation of material objects and networks around which infrastructures are formed.

Rapidly changing situations allow for insight into how infrastructures trigger the emergence, disappearance and transformation of specific practices, and of how these developments are, in turn, important for infrastructural configurations. This chapter explores features of this infrastructure-practice dynamic through two village-level case studies of rural electrification in Thailand and Laos. In both cases, different ‘layers’ of electricity infrastructure entered the villages in time frames of a few decades. In-depth fieldwork provides insight into how infrastructures, practices and demand co-evolved in these two cases. Specifically, the chapter examines the emergence and development of new and ‘electrified’ practices, such as watching television and lighting. The cases illustrate that the consequences of electrification are sometimes mediated by pre-existing material arrangements or by their absence, and that these consequences spill over into various aspects of life. By considering systems and politics of provision alongside shifting relations between variously electrified practices, the chapter bridges between concepts associated with socio-technical innovation, with political ecology, and with accounts of emerging complexes of social practice. It shows that systems and technologies of supply are not simply outcomes or expressions of ‘large’ political-economic forces, but are constituted and reproduced through the practices of different stakeholders.

In 2014 there were 28 million private cars in Great Britain. Given that the current standard for residential parking bays is 2.4m*4.8m (HM Government, 2010), and making the modest estimate that every car has just one space, at its owner’s home, that’s 336 million meters square. Nearly all of the Isle of Wight, or placed in a straight line, a third of the distance to the moon. Residential parking space is a big topic, yet just 60 years ago it was not part of neighbourhood plans at all. This Chapter traces how residential parking became a normal, legitimate and planned for aspect of everyday life, drawing on archive research about Stevenage New Town between 1946 and 1970. The Chapter analyses the relationship between the practices of planners – in particular their understanding of future parking space demand - and the changing demands of tenants for parking space near to the home. Through this analysis, the argument is made that parking space is not simply a necessary outcome of automobility, rather it plays a critical part in anticipating and embedding automobility too. The implications of the analysis for present and future practices of planning are discussed.
