PBR were originally developed as an alternative to patents and were first recognised internationally by the 1961 International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV Convention). UPOV 1961 was first revised in 1972 and again in 1978. The 1978 version of the Convention recognises the so-called ‘farmer’s privilege’ allowing farmers to re-use propagating material from the previous year's harvest and to freely exchange seeds of protected varieties with other farmers It also provides exemptions for non-commercial research, and for the development of new plant varieties. UPOV was revised again by the 1991 Convention, which strengthens PBR protection, removes the breeders exemption from essentially derived varieties and leaves it up to individual countries to determine whether or not to apply the farmers’ privilege within their territory.

Abstract The author investigates the mode of penetration of the insect integument by pathogenic fungi, Aspergillus flavus, Beauveria bassiana, Cordyceps militaris, Metarrhizium anisopliae, Paecilomyces farinosus and non-pathogenic fungi Aspergillus oryzae and Trichothecium roseum. The test insect was Tenebrio molitor. The mode of penetration bears on mechanical pressure and enzymic activity, the discussion on the latter being tentative.

Abstract Fungicidal spraying experiments carried out in a number of crops in Malawi are described. Bordeaux mixture (4 : 4 : 50) sprays applied after every 2 in. cumulative rainfall during the wet season to tomatoes gave the most economical control of late blight. Isariopsis griseola leafspot on beans was best controlled by Zineb applied weekly. Large groundnut yield increases follow fortnightly applications of copper and sulphur fungicides but these were uneconomical except on one variety. Worthwhile control of late blight on potatoes was achieved by shaking a cuprous oxide fungicide by hand from a hessian sack on to the crop four times during the growing season. Copper oxychloride applied at two-monthly intervals. to coffee controlled Cercospora coffeicola berry disease very cheaply.
