Today I am incredibly delighted to have Ilona Schur, a very enthusiastic nurse who is a graduate of the Nursing School of the University of Patras in Greece. She has been working in the hair restoration field since 2005. She has participated in seven ISHRS world congresses and has participated as a faculty member in three ISHRS educational workshops. Ilona has worked in hair transplant clinics in France, Italy, Israel, South Africa, Greece, Portugal, and Denmark, and she has extensive experience assisting hair transplantation surgeries. She is now also responsible for training novice hair technicians at Zontos Hair & Skin clinic in Athens.

Abstract A widened scar from a previous strip-removal procedure (follicular unit transplant) is a commonly encountered complaint from patients coming in for a second hair restoration surgery. Options for addressing widened scars have included surgical scar revision, transplanting the scar with follicular units, and scalp micropigmentation. The authors present a new approach, where the scar may be thinned with a punching-out technique followed by resuturing the area. Advantages of the technique include that the time spent on this procedure is usually less than 10-15 minutes, it utilizes skills and equipment that most hair restoration surgeons already have, and it also does not use additional precious follicular units. Our experience using this technique in 58 patients showed improved appearance of the scar.

While there is never a perfect practice tissue when working with foreign country regulations, this course used synthetic materials to allow participants to practice hairline design, FUT, FUE, donor assessment, site making, and graft placement. In all, to the Basics Course covered hair restoration from A to Z for newcomers through the combination of 3 hours of lectures and 4 hours rotating sessions for hands-on practice. As chair of the Basics Course, I wish I could list everyone by name who made this course a success, but the list is too long! Dr. Otavio Boaventura and Rita Kaufman were my right and left hands in making this workshop happen, and I am especially grateful to the technicians who worked tirelessly behind the scenes long before and after the workshop was complete to ensure that each station was properly set up with all the equipment. My goal was to make this course balanced and comprehensive in hair surgery skills and I believe we accomplished that.
