Objective: While research and policy predominantly focus on concussions sustained in sports and recreation, other significant mechanisms of injury exist in the pediatric setting. Some evidence suggests that youth who experience motor vehicle crash-related concussions experience prolonged recovery, however little is known about outcomes from other mechanisms, particularly interpersonal assault. The objective of this study was to compare demographic characteristics, medical care, and outcomes among patients with assault-related concussion (ARC) versus sports and recreation-related concussion (SRC). We hypothesized that patients with ARC would experience prolonged time to recovery and would have increased emotional …

Background: Off-road vehicles (ORVs), which include all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and side-by-sides (SxSs), are designed for off-road use only. Iowa law restricts roadway riding to occupational purposes and limits it to daylight hours. A growing number of Iowa counties are opening roadways to recreational ORV use and many counties are choosing not to include a daylight restriction. To better understand this issue, the study objective was to compare and contrast daytime and nighttime ORV crashes …

Background/Purpose: Firearm injuries are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children. Over 40,000 children died by firearms between 2000-2018, and an estimated 200,000 suffered non-fatal firearm injuries during the same period. Despite these staggering figures, there is limited information about the impact of firearm injuries on pediatric health care resource use. Our goal was to evaluate healthcare encounters and expenditures for children one year before and one year following a firearm injury. Methods: Cohort study of children 0-18 years identified using ICD-9/ICD-10 diagnosis codes for firearm injury in the ED or inpatient setting from 2010-2016 in the Medicaid MarketScan (IBM Watson, Armonk, New …
