Prospective associations between alcohol and drug consumption and risky sex among female college students.
Kimberly M Caldeira, Amelia M Arria, Kevin E O'Grady, Elizabeth M Zarate, Kathryn B Vincent, Eric D Wish

Females who ever had vaginal sex were interviewed annually in their first two years of college (n=386, ages 17 to 20 at study outset) and asked about risky sex behaviors and substance use. In year one, 60.2%(wt) had intoxicated sex, 31.4%(wt) had multiple sex partners, and 48.9%(wt) had unprotected sex (i.e., without a condom). At follow-up, high rates of persistence (86.0%, 52.7%, 78.8% respectively) and initiation (36.0%, 23.9%, 41.8%) were observed. In multiple logistic regression analyses, drug use and drinking were independently associated with having multiple sex partners. Intoxicated sex independently predicted condom non-use and multiple sex partners, and appeared to mediate the relationship between substance use and multiple sex partners. Implications for prevention and future research are discussed.

Alcohol-Related Information in Multi-Component Interventions and College Students' Drinking Behavior.
Vandana Thadani, Karen Huchting, Joseph LaBrie

Education-only interventions produce little change in drinking behaviors; but, multi-component prevention programs, which include alcohol information as one feature, can decrease drinking. This study examined the role of alcohol knowledge in a multi-component intervention previously found to reduce first-year female college students' alcohol consumption. Intervention and control group students completed pre and postintervention assessments of drinking behaviors, and a postintervention assessment of alcohol-knowledge. Intervention students outperformed control students on the measure of alcohol knowledge. However knowledge did not predict drinking outcomes for this group, and it was positively correlated with drinking behaviors for control students. The findings suggest that, although learning took place through the intervention, it was not the mechanism by which the intervention reduced drinking behaviors.

Treatment of Alcohol Intoxication at University Health Services: Examining Clinical Characteristics, Drinking Patterns, and Adherence with Referral.
Margaret M Benningfield, Elisa M Trucco, Paul J Barreira, Shelly F Greenfield

OBJECTIVE: This study examines demographics, clinical characteristics, and drinking patterns of students presenting with alcohol intoxication at a university health service. PARTICIPANTS: The sample included one hundred students (50% female, 48% freshmen) treated for alcohol intoxication at university student health services. Complete medical charts were obtained for 80 students (43% female, 46% freshmen). METHODS: A prospective case review was performed between September 2005 and March 2006. RESULTS: Although males reported having more drinks before admission, drinking more frequently, and having more drinks per drinking day than females, there were no other gender differences. Freshmen comprised almost half the admissions, but there were no significant differences in drinking patterns across school years. While only 54% of students were given follow-up referrals, 72.2% of students complied with recommended referrals. Additional assessment information included alcohol use disorders sceening scores, history of previous alcohol intoxication and problems related to use, symptoms of anxiety and depression, and use of anti-depressant medication. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that further investigations of student characteristics and experiences prior to contact with university health services are warranted and may necessary to the development and implementation of programs to reduce harmful alcohol consumption.

Long-term Outcomes of the ATHENA (Athletes Targeting Healthy Exercise & Nutrition Alternatives) Program for Female High School Athletes. 针对高中女运动员的 ATHENA(运动员健康运动与营养替代品)计划的长期成果。

Adolescence and emerging adulthood are critical windows for establishing life-long behaviors. We assessed long-term outcomes of a prospective randomized harm reduction/health promotion program for female high school athletes. The intervention's immediate beneficial effects on diet pill use and unhealthy eating behaviors have been reported; however, tobacco, alcohol and marijuana use were not immediately altered (Elliot et al, 2004). One to three years following graduation, positive benefits in those domains became evident, and intervention students reported significantly less lifetime use of cigarettes, marijuana, and alcohol. Sport teams may be effective vehicles for gender-specific interventions to promote competency skills and deter harmful actions, and those benefits may manifest when acquired abilities are applied in new environments following high school graduation.

A Night in Tijuana: Female Victimization in a High-Risk Environment. 《
Tara Kelley-Baker, Elizabeth A Mumford, Radha Vishnuvajjala, Robert B Voas, Eduardo Romano, Mark Johnson

We examine the epidemiology of victimization among females crossing the U.S. border to drink in Tijuana, Mexico, with the purpose of creating a framework for an intervention to improve safety among female youth in drinking settings. Drinking history, history of victimization, evening drinking experience, and environmental factors are assessed.Among female crossers surveyed in 2005-2006, 53% reported experiencing some type of victimization, with 29% experiencing moderate physical aggression and 38% experiencing unwanted moderate sexual incidents. Youth and reported history of verbal abuse were consistently associated with victimization with more participants frequently reporting incidents of victimization. Predictors of victimization among young females (aged 16-20) generally included environmental factors, whereas evening drinking was associated with victimization among women aged 21 and older.
