Comparing the Effect of Foliar Spraying by Calcium and Boron on Productivity and Quality of Strawberry Fruits under Organic Hydroponic System
Pub Date : 2023-10-01 DOI: 10.7176/jbah/13-18-03
The availability of slow-moving elements within the plant is very important for the growth and productivity of crops, the most important of which are calcium and boron, and the deficiency of any of them leads to a significant imbalance in growth and productivity. This experiment was conducted inside a greenhouse at the National Organic Agriculture Center, Unaiza, Qassim, Ministry of Environment Water and Agriculture, Saudi Arabia to investigations made on the effects of foliar applications levels of calcium (Ca) and boron (B) on yield and quality of strawberries ( Fragaria X ananassa Duch .). Factorial experiment was used in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four levels of calcium (Ca1=100, Ca2 = 200, Ca3= 400 mg/l), and four levels of boron (B1= 5, B2= 10, B3= 20 mg/l), as well as control treatment (C=0), each treatment was replicated three times. Different treatments with different combinations of both elements were studied. Addition of B and Ca influence vegetative growth parameters, yield attributes and fruit quality parameters significantly compare to the control such as the percentages of Glucose%, Fructose%, vitamin C and Sucrose%. Therefore, results indicated that sprays of mixture contained calcium and boron at different levels of Ca2B1, Ca1B1 and Ca3B1 increased fruit diameter, fruit length, weight /plant, and total weight (g), while with Ca3B1 and Ca3B2 were showed high increment of sugar percentages. According to results authors recommended foliar application of combination of calcium and boron as follow Ca2B1, Ca3B1 and Ca3B2 to improve yield attributes and fruit quality parameters. Investigation of the Phytopathological Causes of Citrus Tree Trunk Foaming in Turkey
Pub Date : 2023-10-01 DOI: 10.7176/jbah/13-18-04
Foaming was observed in mandarin and orange species that were grafted on rootstocks trifoliata ( Poncirus trifoliata ) hybrids and was investigated in terms of phytopathological causes in the Cukurova region, where 80% of Turkey's citrus production takes place. Citrus exocortis viroid (CEVd) and citrus cachexia viroid (CCaVd) agents were screened by RT-PCR method by taking samples from different citrus rootstocks and cultivars showing foamy bark symptoms. It was determined that 17 of the 49 isolates were infected with CEVd and 14 of them were infected with CCaVd. There are 4 trees infected by both viroid agents at the same time. Based on a blast analysis, it was found that the reference genomes for CEVd and CCaVd in the NCBI GenBank had 95-100%. To check on the presence of bacterial and fungal agents, isolates were created from the foamy bark tissue of citrus trees . Lasiodiplodia theobromae , Ilyonectria liriodendri , Fusarium pseudonygamai , Alternaria alternata , and Streptomyces spp . were found as a result of the isolations. Analysis of soil samples taken from citrus plantations that had indications of foamy bark revealed a high calcareous soil structure with a pH above 7.5. The Agricultural sector continues to be a major employer of Ugandan citizens with an estimated 68.1% of the population engaged in agriculture, forestry and fishing (Uganda National Household Survey [UNHS], 2019/2020). The government of Uganda prioritises the agricultural sector and emphasises agro-industrialisation as the first thematic area in the third national development plan (National Planning Authority [NPA], 2020). The third Uganda national development plan particularly seeks to affirm the dominance of as a source of livelihood leading to the long term aspiration of increasing household incomes and improving the quality of life. Similarly, the East African Community vision 2050 seeks to promote value addition through agro-processing and globally; the sustainable development goals envisage ending hunger, achieving food security, improving nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture by the year 2030 (United Nations – Sustainable Development Goals [UN-SDGs], 2015). Notably, the national, regional and global aspirations require trained human resources in the agricultural sector for the achievement of the desired targets. However, student enrolment in agricultural subjects is too low to create that critical mass of agricultural specialists in the sector. The total student enrolment in agricultural subjects is estimated at a mere 2577 students out of the 275,254 enrolled in higher education institutions (National Council for Higher Education [NCHE] (State of Higher Education), 2018/2019). Irrespective of the specialised area of training at higher education, graduates ordinarily take employment opportunities from different sectors at the earliest open opportunity. The article, therefore, has the objective of establishing the destinations of students who graduated from agricultural subjects. Precisely the article focuses on the following objectives; establishing the employment status of agricultural graduates from higher education institutions; ascertaining the employment sectors of agricultural graduates in relation to their field of training; establishing incomes ranges of agricultural graduates and determine the additional skills’ set for agricultural graduates to enhance their service delivery.

A Review of the Efficiency of Alternative Feed Sources for Cultured Catfish Species in Nigeria
Pub Date : 2023-09-01 DOI: 10.7176/jbah/13-16-03
The African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, is a major cultured food fish in Nigeria because of its fast growth, good feed conversion, hardiness, and high market value. However, one of the problems facing catfish production is the high cost of fish feed caused by the escalating cost of fishmeal, the main protein source in fish feeds. In Nigeria, the raw material for fish feed formulation such as under-utilized “trash” fish, groundnut cake, palm kernel cake and soybeans are becoming increasingly expensive. The sustainability of the catfish culture industry, therefore, depends on reducing the fishmeal content of fish feeds by finding alternative protein sources of good nutritional quality that are readily available and more cost effective than fishmeal.

Correlation Analysis on Growth and Yield Parameters of Tomato Varieties as Influenced by Pinching, Mineral Fertilizers and Mulching in Three Seasons
Pub Date : 2023-09-01 DOI: 10.7176/jbah/13-16-02
Tomato, a vegetable crop of immense importance in the diet and economy of Nigeria requires better agronomic practices for optimum performance. Three trials were conducted in Ogbomoso and Mokwa, between 2012 and 2014 cropping seasons to assess the effect of pinching, mineral fertilizers and mulching on growth and fruit yield of tomato. Correlation analysis was done using statistical SAS package to determine one and two tailed differences among growth and yield parameters. In experiment one, the parameters had positive and negative significant relationship with each other. Fruit weight of tomato had positive significant relationship with total fruit yield with the highest (r=0.95) among other parameters at P≤0.01. In experiment two, the highest degree of association was from fruit length which positively correlated with fruit diameter, fruit weight and total fruit yield obtained from (r=0.76) at P≤0.01. Experiment three recorded the highest degree of association from parameters of fruit weight of tomato which was positive and significantly correlated with total fruit yield (r=0.100) at P≤0.01. Therefore, it can be recommended that for better performance of tomato fruit weight and total fruit yield should be positive and significantly correlated with each other at P≤0.01.
{"title":"Correlation Analysis on Growth and Yield Parameters of Tomato Varieties as Influenced by Pinching, Mineral Fertilizers and Mulching in Three Seasons","authors":"","doi":"10.7176/jbah/13-16-02","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7176/jbah/13-16-02","url":null,"abstract":"Tomato, a vegetable crop of immense importance in the diet and economy of Nigeria requires better agronomic practices for optimum performance.
