In this paper, we present e-ESAS, a mobile phone based remote monitoring tool for patients with palliative care need, carefully designed for developing countries. Most of the current remote monitoring systems are complex, obtrusive and expensive resulting in a system unsuitable to deploy in low-income countries. We here describe evolution and performance of e-ESAS within the contexts of breast cancer patients as these patients require management of pain and other symptoms. Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) was developed to capture the important parameters where patients themselves report their level of ten symptoms. Our e-ESAS improves the current system by reducing visits by patients to clinics, providing more flexibility to both doctors and patients, improving the quality of data, accommodating doctors to fine tune interventions, and providing a convenient representation of data to doctors. User interface was designed according to feedbacks from users resulting in a UI with better performance. The system is intended to provide a platform for future research as large amount of real data is being accumulated from the deployment. The system demonstrates the feasibility of accessing quality health care through cell phones by rural, poor patients in developing countries. The system enables doctors to serve more patients as it saves time for doctors, requiring less time to view patient information.

Data compression is essential for continuously collected physiological signals in mobile health monitoring applications in order to prolong battery lifetime and reduce transmission costs. Transformation-based compression techniques have been widely used due to their high compression ratio; however, distortion caused during compression process degrades clinical quality of decompressed signals. In this paper, we propose a simple method called "Critical Markers" method that is based on detection of peaks and valleys in the original signal. When used in conjunction with existing transformation-based compression methods, the critical markers corrects the distortions without compromising the fidelity of the compressed output. The critical markers can also be used standalone to replace existing compression methods in certain types of diagnosis, thus reducing line and processor overhead. We have implemented the proposed method on a smartphone and have tested it with real ECG and PPG data sets. The experimental results confirm that our method maintains high compression performance while also guaranteeing high clinical quality.

Smartphones have the potential to revolutionize health monitoring and delivery. Significant attention has been given to personal health devices and systems to help individuals and medical practitioners monitor health and treatment compliance. The data collected from these systems also has significant value to public health workers and epidemiologists. However, requirements for backend analysis and supplemental data differ between personal and public health applications. In this paper we describe iEpi, an end-to-end system for collecting, analyzing, and utilizing contextual microdata through smartphones for epidemiological and public health applications.

Fall detection of the elderly becomes more critical in an aging society. However, how to put forward fall detection with reliability and high accuracy while maintaining real-time and energy-efficiency is an important issue. To this end, we design and implement an energy-efficient prototype called Asgard, in which a fall detection algorithm and a hybrid energy-efficient strategy are proposed. The algorithm, which can flexibly track the body change by recovery angle detection, helps to reduce the false positive phenomenon as well as detection time (DT). Results of comprehensive evaluations show the accuracy rate of 96.25%, which is higher than AMD (Advanced Magnitude Detection). More notably, the prototype still has low DT with the aforementioned accuracy. More precisely, with the proposed hybrid energy-efficient algorithm, Asgard functions well for approximately one month using only two AA batteries (1500mAH each).

Mobile and Pervasive environments built over wireless infrastructures have introduced new possibilities in the healthcare sector. Third generation wireless technologies implemented simple health monitoring applications involving small amount of data transfer using short messages. Future healthcare systems will use fourth generation (4G) mobile broadband technologies to perform round-the-clock mobile health monitoring, remote tests, physician consultations and diagnosis with high resolution image, audio and video transfer and other complex operations in a mobile environment. In this work, we present architecture for a fourth generation mobile broadband based healthcare system and create a test-bed to evaluate its performance.

In this paper, the authors describe the software infrastructure built to provide healthcare solution for home and small clinic scenario using mobile healthcare devices. The paper discusses how the data from the devices have been stored into a generic Internet of Things (IoT) backend and then retrieved using web services to provide an interactive portal which provides patient data in a unified manner. The novelty of the approach lies in the use of a mobile device as a gateway to reach the backend IoT platform, which supports application deployment and then applying it to the health-care vertical. The mobile device has hence been used as a pervasive healthcare gateway that collects data from the medical devices using either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and uploads the data to the back-end server in desired format. Hence the mobile application acts as the edge platform. Several connected healthcare devices like ECG, pulse oxygen meter, body fat analyzer and blood pressure monitor have been used in conjunction with the mobile gateway.

In this paper, a monopole antenna backed by an inkjet-printed electromagnetic band gap ground (EBG) plane on paper substrate is proposed for wearable applications with drastically enhanced communication range. This novel design approach for WBAN and wearable biomonitoring applications alleviates the on-body antenna's performance degradation, which may cause a significant degradation of the wireless system's performance as well. The communication range improvement compared to conventional antenna is demonstrated by using a benchmarking commercial wireless temperature sensor module. In addition, the advantages and the integrability of the proposed wearable antenna topology into mobile wireless on-body health care systems is discussed in detail.

In this paper, we present a new algorithm that automatically classifies wandering patterns (or behaviors) of patients with Alzheimer's disease and other different types of dementia. Experimental results on a real-life dataset show that this algorithm can provide a robust and credible assistive technology for monitoring patients with dementia (PWD) who are prone to wandering. Combined with indoor and outdoor location technologies using ubiquitous devices such as smart phones, we also demonstrate the feasibility of a remote mobile healthcare monitoring solution that is capable of reasoning about wandering behaviors of PWD and real-time detection of abnormalities that require timely intervention from caregivers.

Recent Advances in technology has led to the development of small, intelligent, wearable sensors capable of remotely performing critical health monitoring tasks and then transmitting patient's data back to health care centers over wireless medium. In this paper, we propose in first step to study the issues related to the acquisition of medical information concerning a patient via a set of wireless sensors embedded in the patient himself. Secondly, we focus on treatment and use of this information either by a local contractor equipment (personal coordinator) with a capacity of calculation or offset after transfer in 3G and/or WiFi connection to a data server based at the attending physician or hospital.

With age, injury, or disease, human memory can be significantly impaired. Current coping strategies range from simple aids such as post-it notes and calendars to, more recently, assistive devices which attempt to provide reminders at appropriate times, capture details of important events, or aid with performing complex tasks. In this paper we extend the state of the art by reporting on a pervasive system designed to 'orientate' a person with memory problems by reminding them in real time of details and personal memories of their surroundings. We describe a three-level architecture, consisting of a novel wearable sensing device, mobile phone, and Internet service, where each level is less constrained in terms of energy and offers greater computational capability. This kind of distributed architecture for a memory aid has not been reported before. The wearable device typically draws 38.5mA of current, allowing a full day's operation on a single charge. We demonstrate the operation of the system, which successfully identifies the faces of those nearby and shows their names on the mobile phone.
