Training and Education for Intergenerational Activities: An Agenda for the Future. 代际活动的培训和教育:未来的议程。

Summary This paper presents a variety of issues that intersect in preparing personnel for intergenerational work. It addresses such issues as the scope of intergenerational practice, the expanded roles of personnel in intergenerational programs, the various competencies and skills needed for work, and the need to integrate intergenerational preparation into the formal systems of training and education for human services. The author suggests that the final challenge in the advancement and training of practitioners for intergenerational work is the establishment of academic sponsorship in the field of intergenerational practice.

Summary This paper offers a rationale for public support on behalf of intergenerational programming that invokes an ideal of citizenship. This rationale is contrasted with the more commonly cited “sentimental” justifications such as promoting life satisfaction, attitude changes and good feelings. Four models intentionally based on the rationale of civic education are presented as exemplars of intergenerational programs that fulfill a public purpose by contributing to vital social issues.

Intergenerational Programs — Impact on Attitudes 代际项目-对态度的影响

Summary This paper reports on the impact on attitudes of younger and older participants in intergenerational programs. The elderly surveyed in several programs reported increased feelings of well-being and life-satisfaction as a result of their involvement with children. The results from children, however, are mixed with both positive and negative attitudinal outcomes attributed to their intergenerational experiences. The author suggests that measuring attitude change might be more conclusive if the research considered the longitudinal growth and development associated with attitude learning and change.

Intergenerational Exchange in Developing Countries 发展中国家的代际交换

Summary In the developing countries, the most influential modern social change is the “greying” of the population. In these countries, there are variations in the ratio of young people to old and also changes in intergenerational relationships. Modern education in these nations is contributing to undermining the roles and prestige of the less educated elders. The patterns of “greying” that have been rapidly occurring during the past 20 years in the developing countries are the same patterns that slowly occurred during a 200 year period in the developing Western industrial nations. These processes often leave grandparents alone, or grandparents living with grandchildren where the parent generation is absent. This is a largely un-researched field in developing countries and where some successful intergenerational models arc beginning to emerge.

Child Development and Intergenerational Programming 儿童发展和代际规划

Summary This paper explores the connection between child development and intergenerational relationships. The social isolation experienced by today's children as a result of demographic, economic, and social changes and the effect of this isolation on child development are outlined as an overall rationale for intergenerational programming. The discussion focuses on four developmental stages of children from infancy through adolescence. Within each stage, the crucial developmental tasks are described as well as ways in which older adults might foster development at that stage. Examples of current intergenerational programs are highlighted within each stage.
