Optical technologies are considered one of the key technologies in the 21st Century. A multiplicity of current and future applications of light requires highlydeveloped optical systems. A general trend in the new and further development of optical systems is to increase their performance, for example, in the form of a higher image quality. On the one hand this is determined by the physical design layout of systems and on the other hand by the possibilities of technical realization. As part of the technical realization a close link between constructive design and technology implementation is necessary. Optical high-performance systems are a special group of optical systems, such as those used, for example, in optical systems for mask and wafer inspection, in high-resolution microscopy, or in specifi c laser applications. Future and partly current requirements for such systems can not be safely met with the existing possibilities of technical realization. From this follows that there is a growing need for technological and constructive development. As part of the structural design of optical systems, the mounting of optical components with mechanical elements, for instance lens mounts, and the connection of mounted optical components to more complex systems, such as objectives, take a central role. Th e aim of this paper is to show the current state of development on the implementation of these mounting applications and to methodically develop opportunities for its enhancement. For this, the fi eld of work is defi ned in terms of concept and content. Using a consideration of the manufacturing and application of optical high performance systems, requirements are derived for their further development. In order to realize these requirements solution spaces and methods have been systematically developed and then analyzed to fulfi l the given requirements.
