The first winner of the ACM SIGHPC Emerging Woman Leader in Technical Computing is Dr. lkay Altintas, of the San Diego Supercomputer Center. She is recognized "for research leadership that makes distributed scientific and technical computing applications more reusable, scalable, and reproducible."

This year SIGHPC awarded seven travel grants to students to help them attend SC17. The grants consist of complimentary Technical Program registration and a stipend of $600 US for those traveling from within North America or $1200 US for those traveling from outside. In addition, the students are paired with a mentor to help them navigate the conference.

Following an intense three-day competition held at SC18, a team of four undergraduates took home the top prize of $250 in the Computing4Change contest for their project, Resisting Cultural Acceptance of Violence. This team consisted of: Peizhu "Pam" Qian (Simmons College), Hoano Rosario (Chaminade University of Honolulu), Nilo Espinoza (University of Guam), and Claire Fiorino (San Diego State University).
