We propose a digital content viewing system which visualizes the polymorphic relationships among digital content interactively and uses it as a visual interface. The relationships are expressed by associating of two content and grouping and shown by directed graphs. On the graphs, nodes mean the content files or the groups, and edges mean correspondences or group members. The graphs are archived as relation catalogues separately from content files. We visualize the relations of content on a directed graph. To visualize the graphs, we use a method of locating nodes by horizontal directions and height. Nodes linked with a target node will be located on a horizontal circle and their height is decided by their relation catalogue. After deciding the node location, nodes and links are drawn using 3D graphics and animation. The visualization result called “polymorphic view” is used as a visual interface for selecting content. Selecting content on the visualized graph will expand new links and new content nodes additionally. We can show another content by tracing graph links. It becomes easy to understand the relations between digital content, because we can change the direction and size of the directed graph. We developed a content viewer system (MoSaIC-II) using the polymorphic view as a visual interface and we can see the usability of the polymorphic view.

Automated 3D model reconstruction from photographs
Pub Date : 2014-12-01 DOI: 10.1109/VSMM.2014.7136644

This workshop is intended to provide an overview of the state of the art as well as practical considerations in relation to the automatic reconstruction of textured 3D models solely from a number of photographs. Presented will be the theory, introduction to the current software solutions and possible pipelines as well as some of the post processing requirements and tools. Reference will be made to camera, lenses and photographing techniques that result in an optimal chance of successful reconstructions. In short, the workshop will aim to provide a complete introduction to the subject. The emphasis will be towards creating 3D assets for gaming and virtual environments as well as targeting the recording and archive of heritage objects or places. These later applications will be the topic of most of the examples based upon the practical deployment of this technology by the author.

Computer-assisted reconstruction of virtual fragmented cuneiform tablets

Cuneiform is one of the earliest known systems of writing consisting of wedge-shaped strokes forming signs impressed on clay tablets. Excavated cuneiform tablets are typically fragmented and their reconstruction is, at best, tedious but more often intractable given that fragments can be distributed within and between different collections. Digital archives relevant to cultural heritage, such as the Cuneiform Digital Palaeography Project [1]-[4] and the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative [5], [6], now make richly annotated artefact media available to wide populations. Similarly, developments in computer-aided three-dimensional reconstruction methods offer the potential to assist in the restoration of broken artefacts. In this paper, a system for providing computer assistance for identifying and orientating matching fragment pairs is described. Metrics to grade the quality and likely significance of potential matches are also described. Finally, the results from experiments with scans of laboratory fabricated tablet fragments and genuine fragmented cuneiform tablets are reported.
