Ceratocystis canker and wilt disease has had a devastating impact on plantations of Acacia mangium in Sabah, Malaysia effectively resulting in its discontinuation in the region. The immediate future of industrial tree plantations in Malaysia relies on alternative species, such as Eucalyptus pellita , which are suited to the environment and market opportunities. However, identifying A. mangium planting stock with high levels of tolerance to Ceratocystis manginecans provides substantial opportunities for its large scale planting and sustainability in the future. The aim of this study was to verify tolerance to C. manginecans in over 100 putatively tolerant A. mangium clones selected from a family screening trial consisting of 100 wild families. Selections from the family screening trial were based on either short-lesion length measured six weeks after inoculation or survival 12 months post inoculation. Six clonal trials were established under field conditions over two years with more than five ramets of most clones tested in at least two separate trials. The trees were inoculated with C. manginecans 12 months after trial establishment, and assessments of crown health and survival as well as the presence or absence of sunken bark, gummosis or stem borer infestation were carried out 12 months post inoculation. Narrow-sense heritability estimates were moderate for external variables and for crown health (0.14–0.24) and survival (0.14–0.22). Genetic correlation estimates between trials were generally high, indicating that assessments were repeatable across trials. Correlations between traits used to assess damage following inoculation indicated that different traits may be used to identify clones that tolerate infection. The accuracy of the screening showed that resistant clones can be identified and used to produce A. mangium tolerant to infection by C. manginecans .

Industrial pulp and paper plantations have expanded substantially in Indonesia over the past three decades. This paper analyses how plantations were established and changed over time, focusing on the ways owners have asserted control over massive forestland areas. The study centres on two major companies which control 95% of plantations in Riau, a province with the largest industrial tree plantations in Indonesia. The current analytical framework combines national and subnational interests alongside theories of bureaucratic politics. We found that large-scale forestland controlled by a few private players was made possible through meeting national development targets and carried out by the national forest bureaucracy. Under this constellation, a few conglomerates closely tied to central power holders secured mandates to pursue forestry goals. Our findings explain emergent subnational patterns among local bureaucracies, whose growing interests coincide with large-scale plantations agglomerating land to supply shortfalls in mega-processing plants. The mechanisms of formal and informal interests at play among bureaucracies at both national and sub-national levels enrich our current understanding about forestland acquisitions, which is often simplistically interpreted as a centralised state obsessed with economic opportunities presented by a global commodity

Acacia mangium was planted on a large scale in the 1990s as it was thought to be the solution for afforestation in Sarawak. However, the trees are now being decimated by fungal diseases which attack its stem and its roots. The genetic variability of the species is limited and thus, there is little hope of saving the species through selection for resistance or tolerance. Hybridisation with A. auriculiformis holds some promise though, as witnessed in Vietnam. Selected hybrids show resistance to some of the diseases, grow well and can easily be propagated by vegetative means. The switch to A. crassicarpa presently holds much promise for poor and peat soils and some disease resistance, and there may be a few different acacia species still available for testing. Nevertheless, controlled hybridisation of the acacias is not easily accomplished. Except for the hybrid mentioned above, vegetative propagation is not easy, such as is with the eucalypts. The eucalypts ( E. pellita, E. deglupta, E. brassiana, E. tereticornis var. tereticornis , possibly also E. leptophleba, especially Papua Island and northern Australian provenances) are a good starting point for eucalyptus cultivation in equatorial climates like Sarawak, along with the use of hybridisation and vegetative propagation. These species can form the pillar for selection, formation of landraces, hybridisation and vegetative propagation for the humid and hot equatorial climate. Eucalypts are more demanding on soil quality, but easy to hybridise and amenable to vegetative propagation and with a wide array of wood qualities. Their gene pools and the clones obtained can be widened with genetic inputs of a variety of other species being bred into eucalypts in sub-tropical regions where they are extremely successful. A wide genetic base and quick replacement for more productive and resistant clones form one of the bases for successful short-rotation forestry. About 25 additional species are suitable for hybridisation. Possibilities within the genus Corymbia are briefly discussed in this paper.
