With the ever-growing net of cultural-touristic holiday routes in Switzerland, people are becoming more and more tired of impersonal travel and aimless wandering. While some are still satisfied with the commonplace phrase “the way as a goal,” others look for more meaning in their favorite activity. Here comes pilgrimage as an ideal combination of bodily and spiritual search. But is a leap from “tourist” to “pilgrim” realistic and how can it help to replenish one’s Christian faith? A project of two Swiss missional organizations was set exactly for this purpose: to animate the life of faith of the post-modern seekers of truth.

This paper was written to discuss whether or not to agree with the claim that ‘The question is not whether the church has a political right to speak politically, but whether it has a theological duty’ and to provide an appropriate rational. In answering this I use one of the supporting lectures for the unit which suggests that preaching, as understood by the Second Helvetic Confession (SHC), provides the method for engaging with the public square. I offer a particularly Pentecostal critique of this approach with a view to effectively and fruitfully engaging the public square

This paper examines the terms and conditions of discipleship, which is fundamentally and unmistakably costly. Authentic disciples who faithfully follow the demands of Jesus as specified in the Gospel (Luke 14:27) and put loyalty to the one eternal God above the demands of the state will inevitably encounter opposition and conflict. They may even experience martyrdom; but for those whose uncompromising commitment to their Lord as not merely an “alternate reality” but the ultimate reality to whom all humanity is accountable, the promise is that faithfulness unto death will be rewarded with a crown of life (Rev 2:10).

EDITOR,-In a thorough investigation, Haga et al were unable to demonstrate the presence of measles virus RNA in intestinal specimens from patients with inflammatory bowel disease (Gut 1996; 38: 211-5). Although they developed an exquisitely sensitive technique, there remains a fundamental flaw in their methodology. They described intestinal tissue postoperative resection times ranging from 20 to 90 minutes. Such prolonged ischaemic times would have reduced the sensitivity of their assay considerably, as substantial RNA degradation would have occurred. MacPherson et al reported a significantly lower yield of RNA in surgical intestinal specimens with ischaemic times of45 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes compared with biopsy specimens frozen within 15 seconds.' Further degradation can also occur during prolonged storage at -70°C. The assay may be sufficiently sensitive to detect one viral genome, but low copy number RNA species are likely to have been lost on the way. This could be tested by attempting to amplify an intestinal RNA species present in much lower copy numbers than 1-actin from their extracted intestinal RNA samples. The authors must apply their technique to freshly resected intestinal tissue before they can conclude that nested RT-PCR fails to detect measles, mumps or rubella viral genomes. This study contextualizes the case of the medieval disabled Benedictine monk and scholar Hermanus of the Reichenau with modern theological approaches to disability, resulting in the challenge of several assumptions. Neither Hermanus’ theology nor his identity are defined by his disability. This is both confirmed and contradicted by modern theologians. Liberation from expectations such as virtuous suffering and the importance of mutuality and community emerge as keys to a self-determined successful life fulfilling Shakespeare’s concept of a ‘narrative’. An explicit disability theology is not only not necessary, but may be counterproductive and limiting, both of God and of self.
