We describe our attempts to build problem solving engines that together cover a large portion of combinatorial optimization problems encountered in real world applications. Our approach is to select a list of standard problems, and develop their solvers as engines. All the engines we developed are based on the idea of local search and metaheuristics. As standard problems, we have chosen so far CSP (constraint satisfaction problem), RCPSP (resource constrained project scheduling problem), GAP (generalized assignment problem), VRP (vehicle routing problem), SCP (set covering problem), MAX-SAT (maximum satisfiability problem), 2PP (2-dimensional packing problem) and others. We outline definitions of these problems, algorithmic contents of engines, and some computational results, putting emphasis on RCPSP and VRP.

We propose a method of automatically constructing Web content from video streams with metadata that we call TV2Web. The Web content includes thumbnails of video units and caption data generated from metadata. Users can watch TV on a normal Web browser. They can also manipulate Web content with zooming metaphors to seamlessly alter the level of detail (LOD) of the content being viewed. They can search for favorite scenes faster than with analog video equipment, and experience a new cross-media environment. We also developed a prototype of the TV2Web system and discuss its implementation. Our experimental result shows 35% improvement for scene search tasks of video streams.

3D video is not an artificial CG animation but a real 3D movie recording the full 3D shape, motion, and precise surface color & texture of real world objects. It enables us to observe real object behaviors from any viewpoints as well as to see pop-up 3D object images. We believe the exploitation of 3D video technologies will open up a new world of versatile cultural and social activities: visual communication, entertainment, training & learning, archiving, and so on. We give an overview of our research attainments so far obtained: (1) a PC cluster system with distributed active cameras for real-time 3D shape reconstruction, (2) a dynamic 3D mesh deformation method for obtaining accurate 3D object shape, (3) a texture mapping algorithm for high fidelity visualization, and (4) user friendly 3D video editing system.

The Southeast Asia sea turtle associative research (SEASTAR2000) was started in 1999 by the request of the Thai government. The research focused on tracking sea turtles using the Argos system. The results of the research clarified migratory paths of adult female green turtles after their nesting. In order to measure fine scale turtle behaviors, the project included development of new devices including a magnetic field sensor accelerometer tag (MR tag), a GPS-Argos platform terminal transmitter (GPS-Argos PTT) and a visual data storage tag (CCD tag). Based on the successful results of the SEASTAR2000, the Thai government requested us to investigate migration behavior for the Mekong giant catfish as well as sea turtles. The Mekong giant catfish is endemic to the Mekong River but an endangered species now. Mekong giant catfish tracking project (MCTP) was started in 2002. The project was performed using coded ultrasonic transmitters in Mekong River.

We summarize our research results on next generation information distribution, which can serve as key technologies for e-government and e-commerce. Two topics are covered. One is translating XML access authorizations, which is a vital technology for exchanging XML documents between various organizations while preserving required access security. The other is generating Web menus for configurable goods. This topic covers an important issue in e-commerce, discussing the problem of generating appropriate Web menu structures for configurable goods, by which buyers can easily configure components of their needs, with less chance of facing combination errors.

We consider IP traffic modeling to evaluate the packet loss probability. It is well-known that IP traffic shows long-range dependence or self-similarity in a long time-scale, whereas it looks random in a short time-scale. Thus we consider the branching Poisson process that has such a multiple time-scale feature. We focus on a queue fed by branching Poisson input and briefly discuss the local Poisson property in a short time-scale. Further we construct an equivalent MMPP input in such a sense that the packet loss probability can be predicted by evaluating the queue fed by the MMPP input.

The big change expected in the 21st century includes the revolution of industrial structure and it is thought that people engaging in knowledge industries will increase in the future. The aim of this COE program is development of information technologies for the basis of coming knowledge society as well as development of human resources to support such a society. The establishment of studies for boundary areas to other fields is especially pursued, while collaborations with local communities and overseas base centers are featured. In this program, the school of informatics specialties, such as algorithms, basic theory, multimedia understanding, artificial intelligence, database and Web are combined systematically and specialties such as intellectual information media, database and Web technology, which are playing a main role in information distribution evolution, is further developed. In addition, establishment of research fields for boundary areas to other fields (agriculture, medicine, economy, law, education and psychology) is focused. For these purposes, development of human resources for the information technology field is performed by local collaboration as field works, cooperative research at overseas base centers.

We have developed Japanese Web search engine "Mondou (RCAAU)", which was based on the emerging technologies of data mining. Our search engine provides associative keywords which are tightly related to focusing Web pages. We also implemented the visual interface based on the technology of information visualization. In order to improve the performance of various search strategies by using characteristics of Web systems, we try to implement the advanced Web information systems with data mining and information technologies. Firstly, we introduce various Web mining algorithm, which efficiently reduces the computing cost of Web search. We pay attention to a part of useful pages effectively and improve the performance of Web search by using our proposed algorithms. Secondly, for preserving huge volume of born-digital information in the Internet, we are focusing on technologies of Web archiving system like WARP. In order to handle monotonously increasing digital information, we have to resolve many difficult problems of long life data preservation by improving Web searching techniques. Our experiences of our Mondou Web search engine and cooperative distributed Web robots are very useful and effective. Finally, the technologies of P2P (Peer-to-Peer) distributed search systems are becoming important rapidly. For example, it is very hard to discover appropriate information resources by simple queries of Gnutella, Freenet and so on. Therefore, in order to realize the topic-driven search, we propose more intelligent search systems, which are based on the technologies of data mining.

Recent development in interventional radiology enables minimally invasive treatment of aortic aneurysm: endovascular stent grafting. We report image processing method in preoperative planning and intraoperative guidance for assisting endovascular stent grafting. In preoperative planning, it is necessary to design stent graft suitable for each clinical case. Thus we present shape measurement method of aneurysmal aorta for computer assisted design of stent graft. In stent grafting, fluoroscopic image is used as intraoperative image for visualizing lesion and interventional device. As fluoroscopic image is a two-dimensional (2D) image, a doctor has to imagine three-dimensional (3D) shape of aneurysmal aorta. For intraoperative guidance, it is useful to register preoperative 3D CT image with intraoperative 2D fluoroscopic images. We present intraoperative 3D/2D registration method for assisting endovascular stent grafting and show application result to clinical data.
