In the process of continuous assimilation, and due to the problems related to the integration and the preservation of identity, the participants in the subject process – or rather their points of view and activities – have been of major significance for the existence and perspective of the national minorities they belong to. The objective was to subsume the results of the empirical study and emphasize the fundamental perceptions; this might facilitate finding a solution to this problem topic within the public policies of the Republic of Croatia.

The paper presents isolated examples in the preparation and realization of the latest permanent display of the Virovitica Town Museum opened in 2019. Special emphasis has been placed on the museum exhibits from the Ethnological Depar -tment, which are to portray everyday life in Virovitica and its surroundings in the 19 th and the 20 th centuries. The objective of the paper is to present museum exhibits of heritage-related significance through a new contextualization within the museum display, unified by a unique topic and a common story. The museum concept, called the Wooden Age , includes topics of wood as a material originally used from prehi story to the present day. The museum exhibits (in both direct and indirect connec tion with wood) are thus connected with everyday life and human activity through the topics of work, identity, money-earning, family, housing, social life, beliefs, and artistic expression. The paper further tackles museum challenges in selecting and preparing the exhibits, composing stories intended to portray material and non-ma terial heritage, and installing museum exhibits based on museographic considerati ons at a protected cultural monument – the manor huse of the Pejačević family.

The collection of church textiles from the Franciscan monastery in Požega inclu des 164 textile items: 28 chasubles, 12 copes, one hood, 21 dalmatics, 47 stoles, 28 ma -niples, 13 humeral veils, 9 burses, 3 chalice veils, one mitre, and one fabric fragment. The items have mainly been made of silk, cotton and linen fabrics decorated with multi-coloured silk and metal threads, and lamellas. The embroidery on several fa brics has been made using flat stitching, cross stitching and needle painting em broidery techniques, and some fabrics have been decorated with machine tambour embroidery. The most of the items were well-preserved, but dusty, and with some visible mechanical damage and oxidation changes on the woven decorative ribbons. The two oldest liturgical vestments, dated 1646 and 1728, were stored with other textile items in wardrobes with wooden drawers. Textile items had been taken over from the Franciscan monastery in Požega and transported to the Ludbreg Conserva tion Department, where they were first disinfected in a modified atmosphere with nitrogen gas. Documentation including drawings and photographs was made for each item, and the dry cleaning procedure was subsequently carried out on all items. Church textiles were numbered and sorted into thirty-two sets, while other objects were sorted according to type. They were transported in temporary containers to the Franciscan monastery in Požega, where all items were stored in three metal cabinets with drawers.

The paper analyses the content and the importance of ethnographic and folklo rist writings by the Croatian folk poet and ethnographer Ivo Čakalić (1889–1971), born in Doljanovci near Požega, in the context of his cooperation with Vinko Žganec and the Institute of Ethnology of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Tho ugh not academically educated, Ivo Čakalić was a keen reader and writer. He dedi cated a major part of his life to recording old folk customs, sayings and folk songs thematizing miracles and events both from the lives of saints and from everyday life. Since he collaborated with many experts and intellectuals of his time, who encoura ged him to record ethnographic and folklorist material, the most of his writings re mained preserved. The handwritten legacy of Ivo Čakalić is presently in custody of several institutions in Zagreb, Požega, Osijek and Kaptol, as well as in private collec -tions. The archives of the Division of Ethnology currently house twenty-one collec tion of manuscripts, mainly thanks to ethnomusicologist Vinko Žganec. The corres pondence and the photographs taken by Žganec during field research conducted in Požega and its surroundings witness to the course of this collaboration. The fact that all of Čakalić’s writings have been digitized and published in the Academy’s digital repository serves as proof of their value and relevance.
