This paper presents a model of an optical transmitter module (driver & laser) which takes into account temperature, besides electrical and optical effects. MOSFET is an important component of the driver, temperature occurs in its different parameters such as carrier mobility. The vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) is managed by equations of continuity which describe optical and electrical behaviour. The VCSEL parameters depend also on temperature. This is why a thermal model has been added for showing the thermal exchange between VCSEL and other connecting components. VHDL-AMS language allows to describe these different multi-technological phenomena: electrical, optical and thermal.

The investigation how to optimize the LonTalk/EIA-709.1 media access protocol in terms of the soft real-time requirements is presented. As a criterion of usage of the LonWorks networks under soft real-time requirements we assume that either the probability of collision, or the jitter of the access delay must be bounded and small enough. The arguments for selection of the unacknowledged service as the most suitable for real-time services are put forward. The simulation results of the collision rate and the mean access delay as a function of the offered load are presented. The delay jitter for light traffic load is evaluated. Two analytical models for the probability of packet collision are suggested. The one is based on the classical approach and used for light traffic conditions. The other is employed for steady-state heavy load. The conclusions present recommendations for designing soft real-time applications using LonTalk/EIA-709.1 channel.

With the aid of a specific case study, this work presents the options offered by field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) in electric drives applications. As it happened in the transition from microprocessors to digital signal processors (DSP), it is worth to analyse what are the limitations and the possible pitfalls of the FPGA-based design, compared with conventional DSP implementation. As a case study, it has been implemented a space vector modulator (SVM) for a three phase voltage inverter. The proposed SVM algorithm includes a novel dead time compensation technique, whose implementation is made possible solely by the use of an FPGA component. An extended analysis of the state of the art and experimental results are included in the paper.

In the discrete event system such as a flexible manufacturing system, many kinds of work exist together in one system. Each processing is done by the shared resource. The flow of each work mutually becomes an intertwining net structure. The shared resource will be occupied when congestion occurs by the flow of a certain work, it influences the flow of other work, it generates new congestion, and it spreads to the entire system. As a result, it falls into the situation where processing stagnates in the entire system. Therefore, controlling so as not to cause congestion in the flow of each work is indispensable. However, because it differs from single flow, and the bottleneck of the flow of each work changes by the ability distribution to each work in the shared resource, it becomes very complex. Then, the authors propose the approach for achieving the entire flow analysis for the discrete event system with the net structure and the shared resource intersection, by deriving the relational expression of I/O of which the parameter is the ability distribution of one shared resource to each flow, and connecting this one by one. And, the application to the control that improves the performance of the system is examined.

In this work, we suggested a new approach for the basic configuration of a mobile robot capable of being a building block of an intelligent agent. This configuration includes obstacle avoidance (OA), goal tracking (DTG) and communication implemented as competence layers. Moreover, a geometry based behavior arbitration layer is proposed for fusing those behaviors. Proposed control is tested on simulations where different scenarios are studied. Results have confirmed the high performance of the method.

Remote access to control and monitor various devices in industrial and other environments is very important and big challenge for engineers and automation institutes. The Internet technology is providing this accessibility with great benefits to the industry. One such demand is to access an Alien-Bradley SLC 500 family programmable logic controller (PLC) through the Internet using any available standard Web browser. This remote access capability provides real-time data acquisition to monitor and control devices that are connected to the inputs/outputs modules of the PLC. This paper presents a novel scheme to provide real-time accessibility to Alien Bradley PLC to control equipment without using any dedicated licensed software that runs as a tool for the Web server. Microsoft .NET programming technology has been used to implement the novel scheme. It involves two steps. The first step is to read and write data from the PLC SLC 5/03 using Visual Basic .NET (VB.NET) programming language. In the second step, the SLC 5/03 data is displayed on the Web page "monitoring and controlling" as a HTML page, using Active Server Pages .NET (ASP.NET) through the Web Services. The Web server that has been utilized in this project is the Internet information services (US 5.0) under the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server.

The design of real-time embedded systems is a challenging field of research. Those systems use generally very small processing nodes that are interconnected and linked to sensors using an heterogeneous communication system. One primary aspect of our work, focuses on providing a suitable communication platform for real-time applications in an heterogeneous environment. We have developed a new real-time scalable middleware OSA+. The original concepts used in designing OSA+ is especially suited for embedded systems constrained by a small memory footprint requirement. This paper presents these concepts and current results of OSA+.

The paper presents a single-phase PFC converter built in the bridge configuration with split boost inductor placed on the AC side. The proposed topology enables decreasing of switching losses and limits the possible short circuit current through the transistor leg when its control signals temporary overlap. Both features make a construction of high power converters possible. In spite of an increased number of controllable power switches and the use of split choke, the converter's operation relies on a commercially available PFC controller (L4981). Due to the shifted pulses for the upper and the lower switches in the bridge the input current ripple and consequently the output voltage ripple are reduced. Based on a described principle an experimental model with nominal output power 1 kW has been built. Its functionality has been verified by measurements and harmonic analysis.

The work is intended to explain basic ideas related to the problem of design of control system for precise motion flex electromechanical system. The higher complexity of the system owing from nonlinearly (dry friction, backlash) and variable limitations defines using of a number of the simplifying assumptions. The control system design is made in the time domain and based on modal discrete-time control. Computer simulation is important by check of controlled system works in various modes. Three-mass two drive flex mechanics system has been developed and tested.
