Plastic bags, bottles, packing tapes, and fishing lines are at the forefront of the discussion on plastic pollution in the oceans. However, scientific interest on the role of cotton buds in such context is rapidly increasing, as these objects continue to be widely used and discarded improperly. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the abundance and fate of cotton buds as a case study in the Küçükçekmece Lagoon. At two sampling stations, the pebbly beach and the rocky beach, a total of 854 cotton buds were found over the course of six months with an average value of 71.16 litters m-2 per month. The similarity of months of occurrence in summer and autumn was statistically significant. However, in November and December, when meteorological conditions were more severe, significant similarity was observed. Furthermore, the results of the potential environmental hazard, risk assessment, and carbonyl index were used to provide answers to the main problems of cotton bud pollution. Consequently, the hazard level was classified as either III or IV and the risk level was determined unfriendly. In total, 44.5% of the samples had a high level of oxidation. EDX analysis also confirmed that the biofilm influenced the accumulation of metals on the plastic surface. Overall, the results have addressed the issues that should be considered in improving the management strategies for plastics, which can be implemented to reduce the environmental impact of plastics and achieved the main objective of raising awareness on the accumulation of plastic waste generated by anthropogenic activities in coastal areas.

The abundance and movement patterns of lemon sharks ( Negaprion brevirostris) at Lama Bay, Biological Reserve Rocas Atoll, were reassessed by visual census. We considered tides and daylight periods to plan our observations during two expeditions in 2015. Using daily visual counts, the mean abundance of individuals was 29 in austral summer (maximum 35) and 31 in winter (maximum 41). The results indicated that the local lemon shark population might have recovered after 18 years of a substantial drop in mean abundance. In addition, the movement pattern of the species corroborated previous studies related to their fidelity to the birthplace. These results justify the need of continuous monitoring of lemon sharks over the course of time at Rocas Atoll using non-lethal and non-invasive techniques.

This study investigates the impact of winds, tides, and river discharges on the coastal current and salinity variability of Southern Brazil’s inner shelf. Data on wind speed, current, surface salinity, and temperature were collected for analysis from a metocean buoy of the Brazilian Coastal Monitoring System (SiMCosta). The observed current time series can be interpreted as a sum of highly variable flows correlated with local wind stress, and a residual mean current flowing southward along the coast at a few centimeters per second. Tidal currents were predominantly diurnal, albeit negligible, representing approximately 1.7% of the current variance in the region. We observed a prevalence of northwest winds and southeastward currents on the inner shelf, as well as an intermittent flow in both the alongshore and cross-shore directions due to meteorological frontal system passages. The power spectrum of both current components presented similar frequency patterns, indicating the prevalence of high-energy events in periods of 3 to 10 days over the entire time series. The alongshore current is highly correlated (r=0.73, p<0.05) with alongshore wind and a delay of 3 hours. In the low- (period >40 h) and high-frequency (period <40 h), the temporal lags were of 5 and 3 hours, respectively, with correlations of 0.79 (p<0.05) and 0.60 (p<0.05). The wavelet analysis has shown that high-energy events in alongshore wind stress are more common between August and October and less often between February and March, with similar surface currents and salinity patterns. A decrease in surface salinity during the winter season was observed due to the high level of Patos Lagoon’s outflow. Mean daily salinity correlated negatively with Patos Lagoon’s outflow, however part of this variability is associated with the intrusion of Patos Lagoon’s plume and the passage of frontal systems.

Cyanobacterial blooms are a potential threat to human communities and ecosystems. Since the late 1980s, researchers have reported harmful cyanobacterial colonies in Patos Lagoon (PL), the largest coastal lagoon in South America. Most studies concerning harmful blooms in PL have focused on its biology and on its southernmost estuarine region, with little information about its displacement inside the lagoon and the influence of physical forces on its dynamics. This study uses satellite-derived information (normalized difference chlorophyll-a index – NDCI), river discharge data, and meteorological data (wind speed and direction, rainfall, and air temperature) to analyze two bloom episodes in PL, during the austral summer of 2019/2020, specifically in its larger, limnic portion. A 30-year meteorological time series was used to contrast the same summer period. Two remote sensing images from Sentinel-2 were taken of PL margins, near their central portion. The summer of 2019/2020 was drier when compared with the historical data, characterizing low river discharge. This environmental condition was coupled with high temperature, which implies thermal stratification in summer even at 2-m depth sites, which might have promoted cyanobacterial growth and accumulation inside PL. Moreover, weak winds (<<6 m s−1) seemed to accumulate cyanobacterial patches on the water surface, including after vertical mixing caused by strong winds (>6 m s−1). The NDCI values represented the two days of blooms, with higher values occurring under higher water temperatures and low wind speeds.

This study aimed to characterize the spatial distribution and composition of living Benthic Foraminifera (BF) and to comprehend how environmental conditions (e.g., organic matter) can affect communities of these protozoa in the northern and southern sectors of the Santos Basin (SB), in the continental slope and São Paulo Plateau. In this context, 23 stations (65 samples including replicates at each station) were collected between 400 and 2,400 m water depth. Multivariate analyses revealed that the ecological structure of the community changes mainly along the bathymetric gradients. Stations located between 400 and 700 m, both in northern and southern sectors, are characterized by the presence of indicator species of high intensity of currents, such as Globocassidulina subglobosa and Trifarina bradyi. These stations are also mainly marked by the occurrence of Epistominella exigua, a phytodetritivore species. The stations at 1,000 and 1,300 m depth, in both sectors, are characterized by high accumulation of organic matter in the sediments, which favors the development of agglutinated foraminifera species, such as those of the genus Reophax. Finally, the lower slope and the São Paulo Plateau, in both sectors, are oligotrophic regions, with pulses of labile organic carbon, probably low current velocities and the presence of Alabaminella weddellensis. The quantity and quality of food, which are closely related to hydro-sedimentary dynamics and bentho-pelagic coupling in the slope and São Paulo Plateau, are the main factors that influence the distribution of living BF assemblages in the SB.
