This paper presents a semantic system named OntMed for an ontology-based data integration of heterogeneous data sources to achieve interoperability between heterogeneous data sources. Our system is based on the quality criteria (consistency, completeness and conciseness) for building the reliable analysis contexts to provide an accurate unified view of data to the end user. The generation of an error-free global analysis context with the semantic validation of initial mappings generates accuracy, and provides the means to access and exchange information in semantically sound manner. In addition, data integration in this way becomes more practical for dynamic situations and helps decision maker to work within more consistent and reliable virtual data warehouse. We also discuss our successful participation in the Ontology Alignment for Query Answering (OA4QA) track at OAEI 2015 campaign, where our system (DKP-AOM) has performed fair enough and became one of only matchers whose alignments allowed answering all the queries of the evaluation.

Batteries in Electric Vehicles (EV) are subject to a degradation process that has many, yet not fully understood, influential factors. Typically, the battery is continuously monitored by a proprietary Battery Management System (BMS) which records and analyzes various key figures of the battery. Because the BMS is proprietary, the data collected throughout the lifetime of an EV and its battery cannot simply be looked into by the owner but only by the EV manufacturer and licensed service providers. Hence, the EV owner is dependent on the manufacturer to retrieve accurate data regarding the State of Health (SOH) of the battery, e.g. when selling the vehicle or when the battery needs replacement. An in-depth understanding of charging behavior and the degradation process of an EV's battery requires a vast amount of data, which is a crucial factor limiting current research. This paper proposes an information system that blends into the EV charging infrastructure and utilizes a crowdsourcing approach to collect charging transaction data. In order to identify concealed dependencies with regards to battery degradation and to identify patterns in the charging behavior, an enrichment of the raw transaction data is motivated and different information providers are discussed. This augmentation integrates environmental information from various sources such as weather and location data. On a macroscopic view, analyses could point out the correlation between weather, public events, location, and charging demand. On an individual basis, the effect of environmental impacts, charging behavior, and driving profile on battery degradation can be investigated and compared.

Information Reference Architecture for the Portuguese Health Sector
Pub Date : 2015-07-13 DOI: 10.1109/CBI.2015.53
André Vasconcelos, T. Bras
The creation of an information architecture is one of the identified ways that contribute to increase competitiveness, enabling cost reduction and increasing productivity in organizations. When it comes to broaden comprehensive sectors gathering several organizations (for example in the health sector), the creation of a reference architecture acquires a higher importance to guide and constrain the implementation of information architectures of the involved organizations, ensuring interoperability and alignment among them. When creating a reference architecture, following a bottom-up approach, it is essential to identify the informational entities amongst the different data models in order to be possible to integrate these informational entities in the reference architecture that is being developed. This paper describes a process which allows the verification of correspondence between informational entities amongst different data models. As far as the Portuguese case is concerned, there is just one reference architecture for the Public Administration. In this paper we describe its foundations in order to make a specialization in that architecture that can be used, further on, as a reference for the Portuguese health sector in order to increase interoperability. Nevertheless, the presented solution may also be applied to any data models integration following the bottom-up approach.

On the Semantic Feature Structure of Modeling Concepts: An Empirical Study

Is an actor typically considered a human being? What about an autonomous entity? We investigate the typical feature structure of common modeling concepts in order to create an empirically grounded description of the semantic feature structure that people implicitly use while reasoning about, and with such concepts. Apart from the insights into modeling concept structure that this work presents, consequences for the quality of models and use of modeling languages are discussed. We finally discuss in more detail how the process of modeling, especially when it involves multiple people with different backgrounds, modeling different aspects (i.e., enterprise modeling), stands to benefit from more insights into how the individual modelers see the basic modeling concepts shared between them.

Enterprise architecture (EA) offers ways to steer and guide the design and evolution of the enterprise including its information technology (IT). One of the outputs of EA is improved decision-making about IT. Objective: This study aims to provide EA researchers and practitioners with insights into how IT decision-making actually takes place and what that means for them. Method: A systematic literature review was conducted in order to find and analyze primary studies about IT decision-making. Results: We found that IT investment and prioritization is by far the largest decision category. Money seems much more important than content. The IT decision-making process itself is subject to different variables and factors making every IT decision unique. We also found that both rational and bounded rational approaches are used in IT decision-making. EA has not a prominent role in IT decision-making. Conclusions: IT decision-making is a messy and complex process where money plays a prominent role. We argue that, if enterprise architects want to influence IT decision-making, they should follow the money by combining content with investment planning and prioritization. Further research is required into what distinguishes enterprise architects that are successful in IT decision-making, from those that are less successful.
