ABSTRACT Objective To determine the dietary and sociodemographic profile of vegetarian women of childbearing age (18 and 49 years) from the Valle de Aburrá Metropolitan Area in 2021-2022 Methods Through an online survey, 232 vegetarian and vegan women of childbearing age (18 to 49 years) from the Valle de Aburrá Metropolitan Area were surveyed regarding their sociodemographic characteristics, amount of time following this eating pattern and, type and reason for choosing vegetarianism, physical activity, use of nutritional supplements and frequency of consumption of certain food groups. Descriptive analyses, association of variables with the type of vegetarianism and multinomial regression models were performed. Results A total of 232 vegetarian women were surveyed: 60.8% were between 18 and 30 years of age and belonged mainly to the middle class. According to the type of diet, 68.1% used an ovo-lacto-vegetarian diet, 18.1% were vegan, 9.0% lacto-vegetarian and 4.8% ovo-vegetarian. Among the factors evaluated in their potential relationship with the different types of vegetarianism, it is highlighted that vitamin B12 supplementation presents a statistically significant association when using veganism as a comparison category. Conclusion According to the results, among young female adults the vegetarian eating style predominates, without significant differences as to the educational level, adequate levels of physical activity in most of the population; there was a higher prevalence of ovo-lacto-vegetarianism. Vitamin B12 supplementation was significantly higher in the vegan population, indicating that ovo-lacto and ovo-vegetarian populations may be at high risk of vitamin B12 deficiency.

Food practices and nutritional status of university students who use the University Restaurant 使用大学餐厅的大学生的饮食习惯和营养状况

ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the food practices and nutritional status of students who use the University Restaurant at a public university. Methods This is a cross-sectional study carried out with 958 university students. Data related to regular eating practices (≥5 times/week), routine food consumption and nutritional status were collected. The association between University Restaurant attendance and dietary practices and body mass index was reviewed by bivariate logistic regression model and multiple regression. Results Students who attended the University Restaurant three or more times a week were more likely to regularly consume beans (OR: 1.35, p=0.041) and fresh salad (OR: 1.77, p<0.001) and less likely to have afternoon snack (OR: 0.68; p=0.008). In addition, an association between soda consumption and overweight was observed. Conclusion Thus, the importance of strategies that seek to promote incentives for healthy eating and lifestyle practices in the university population become evident.

ABSTRACT Objective Evaluate the association between glycemic control in different emotional perceptions and the adherence to carbohydrate counting by adults with type 1 diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. Methods This cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (Opinion nº 4,147,663) and conducted in July 2020 using a Google Forms® form. Socioeconomic and demographic data were collected; glycemic monitoring according to the individuals’ emotions at the time of measurement (happy, motivated, or hopeful; stressed or anxious; sad, distressed, or with depressive symptoms); data on adherence to carbohydrate counting and social distancing. Pearson’s Chi-Square test was applied with adjusted residual analysis (p<0.05). Results Approximately 64.62% of the 472 participants, had hyperglycemia when stressed/anxious, and 52.97% when they felt sad/distressed/depressive (p<0.000). Associations were observed between having normoglycemia in any emotional situation and performing the carbohydrate counting (p<0.000); perceiving oneself as happy/motivated/hopeful and having hyperglycemia, and not measuring blood glucose was associated with not having the carbohydrate counting (p<0.000); being stressed or anxious was associated with not measuring blood glucose and not having the carbohydrate counting (p<0.000). Conclusion The need for multidisciplinary care to enhance mental health and adherence to treatment for people with type 1 diabetes is highlighted.

ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate the association between neck circumference and anthropometric, clinical, and biochemical parameters in chronic kidney failure patients on hemodialysis. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis in Western Bahia. For the data collection, anthropometric measures were taken and clinical and biochemical data were gathered from the patient records and employing a structured questionnaire. A multiple linear regression was applied to evaluate the relationship between neck circumference and the anthropometric, clinical, and biochemical parameters. Results: A total of 119 patients were evaluated, of which 63.03% were men and 57.98% were aged between 35 and 59 years old. The mean neck circumference of the patients was 36.2±3.8 cm. A negative association was found between neck circumference and the female sex (p<0.001), while waist circumference (p<0.001), the body adiposity index (p=0.002), and pre-dialysis serum urea concentration (p=0.006) were positively associated with neck circumference. Conclusion: Neck circumference is inversely associated with the female sex and positively associated with a high waist circumference, body adiposity index, and serum urea concentration in patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis.

Changes in the frequency of food consumption by adults/elderly according to food insecurity: evidence from a longitudinal study in the northeastern semi-arid region, Brazil, 2011-2014 粮食不安全背景下成人/老年人食物消费频率的变化:2011-2014年巴西东北半干旱区纵向研究证据

ABSTRACT Objective: To prospectively analyze changes in the frequency of individual food consumption of adults/elderly people according to different food insecurity outcomes over time. Methods: Population-based longitudinal study carried out in 2011 (358 individuals) and 2014 (301 individuals) in a municipality in the northeastern semi-arid region. The frequency of food consumption of 37 foods in adults/elderly was assessed using the Food Frequency Questionnaire and food insecurity using the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale. Differences in the proportion of frequency of consumption of each food at baseline (2011) and follow-up (2014) were calculated according to longitudinal categories of change in food insecurity. The McNemar test for paired samples was applied to estimate differences between 2011 and 2014. Results: Among the individuals studied, 38.9% and 30.6% were classified in food security and food insecurity in the two periods (2011 and 2014), respectively, and 23.2% changed from food insecurity in 2011 to food security in 2014. Increase in the frequency of food consumed in the three groups of food insecurity outcomes. Only in the food insecurity group at both times, an increase in the consumption frequency of soft drinks and industrialized juices was observed. In the three groups, when comparing 2011 and 2014, there was an increase in the consumption of local agricultural foods, such as mangoes, sweet potatoes and a decrease in the consumption of pumpkin. Conclusion: Overcoming food insecurity results in positive changes in food consumption, and seasonality is a factor that promotes and limits food consumption.

Comparison of four different nutritional risk screening tools in hospitalized children 住院儿童四种不同营养风险筛查工具的比较

ABSTRACT Objective: Early detection of malnutrition risk in hospitalized children can improve health outcomes and quality of life; however, the number of studies where the pediatric screening tool is appropriate for Turkish children is limited. Therefore, this article aims to determine the prevalence of malnutrition risk in pediatric patients evaluated with Screening Tool for Risk on Nutritional Status and Growth, Screening Tool for the Assessment of Malnutrition in Pediatrics, Pediatric Yorkhill Malnutrition Score, and Simple Pediatric Nutrition Screening Tool with original and adjusted cutoffs and to evaluate which pediatric screening tool is appropriate for Turkish children. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, four published nutritional risk screening tools (Screening Tool for Risk on Nutritional Status and Growth, Screening Tool for the Assessment of Malnutrition in Pediatrics, Pediatric Yorkhill Malnutrition Score, Pediatric Nutrition Screening Tool) were applied to pediatric inpatients (n=604) aged 1 month to 17 years, admitted to a pediatric ward for at least 24 hours. Results: Pediatric Nutrition Screening Tool with adjusted cutoffs had the greatest recognition rate (94.2%) of acute malnutrition. Having a high nutritional risk by Pediatric Yorkhill Malnutrition Score was associated with an increased risk of acute (OR: 6.57 for Screening Tool for Risk on Nutritional Status and Growth, 5.84 for Screening Tool for the Assessment of Malnutrition in Pediatrics, and 20.35 for Pediatric Yorkhill Malnutrition Score) and chronic malnutrition (OR: 1.27 for Screening Tool for Risk on Nutritional Status and Growth, 3.28 for Screening Tool for the Assessment of Malnutrition in Pediatrics, and 1.72 for Pediatric Yorkhill Malnutrition Score). Classifying the at-risk category by the Pediatric Nutrition Screening Tool was related to raised odds of malnutrition (OR: 2.64 for original and 5.24 for adjusted cutoffs). This positive association was also observed for acute (OR: 4.07 for original cutoffs, and 28.01 for adjusted cutoffs) and chronic malnutrition (OR: 1.14 for original cutoffs, and 1.67 for adjusted cutoffs). Conclusion: Pediatric Nutrition Screening Tool with adjusted cutoffs and Pediatric Yorkhill Malnutrition Score have higher diagnostic accuracy than other screening tools in assessing the nutritional status of hospitalized Turkish children and detecting children, particularly with acute malnutrition.

Challenges for building healthy food environment in an agricultural municipality in southern Brazil 巴西南部一个农业城市建立健康食品环境的挑战

ABSTRACT Objective The aim of this paper is to review the challenges for the development of healthier food environments in Palmeira da Missões, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Methods A qualitative approach was carried out with 29 participants. Data were produced through semi-structured interviews and the content was assessed by thematic categories. Results Three main difficulties were identified for the fostering of healthier food environments in the municipality: the disconnection between consumption and food production; the fragility in the food safety regulations and finally, the disconnection between public policies and local actions for food production. Conclusion The results allow to conclude that there are weaknesses concerning the food environments in Palmeira das Missões, which imply challenges for the fostering of healthy eating and, at the same time, a need for more effective articulation and local action.

Analysis of the implementation of Food and Nutrition Education actions in public schools in a capital city in southern Brazil 对巴西南部某首都公立学校食品与营养教育行动实施情况的分析

ABSTRACT Objective To analyze the insertion of Food and Nutrition Education actions in Early Childhood and Elementary Education units of the municipal public school system of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil, in 2019. Methods This analytical study applied an online questionnaire directed to the 125 Early Childhood and Elementary Education schools in Florianópolis. Results Ninety-four schools (75.2%) participated in the study, among which 94.7% developed Nutritional Food Education actions in 2019. It was made evident that the insertion of Nutritional Food Education in the Pedagogical Political Project (p<0.001) and the planning of such actions (p<0.001) in schools has a significant association with their implementation. The participation of the professionals in training in food and nutrition showed no association with the implementation of the Nutritional Food Education actions. The actions developed most frequently were the pedagogical activities in the school curriculum (95.5%), the school garden (71.9%), and the hands-on cooking classes (46.1%). Conclusion The study identified a positive panorama in the capital of Santa Catarina, with actions included transversally in the school curriculum with a multiprofessional focus standing out. However, the need for studies that monitor and evaluate the actions is emphasized.

ABSTRACT Objective Evaluate the effects of maternal low-protein diet on the oxidative stress in the hypothalamus of 60-day-old rats. Methods Male Wistar rats were divided into two experimental groups according to the mother’s diet during pregnancy and lactation; control group (NP:17% casein n=6) and a malnourished group (LP:8% casein n=6). At 60 days of life, the rats were sacrificed for the collection of the hypothalamus for further biochemical analysis. Results Our results showed an increase in oxidative stress in malnourished group, observed through an increase in carbonyl content (p=0.0357), a reduction in the activity of the glutathione-S-transferase enzyme (p=0.0257), and a reduction in the non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity evidenced by the decrease in the ratio reduced glutathione/oxidized glutathione (p=0.0406) and total thiol levels (p=0.0166). Conclusion A low-protein diet during pregnancy and lactation is closely associated with increased oxidative stress and reduced antioxidant capacity in the hypothalamus of sixty-day-old rats.

ABSTRACT Objective Evaluate the contribution of Popular Restaurants in promoting Food and Nutrition Security and fighting hunger. Methods This is an integrative review with searches performed in Scopus, Virtual Health Library, Directory of Open Access Journals, Scientific Electronic Library Online, Web of Science, PubMed and Google Scholar databases. The capture of studies was limited to the period from 2011 to 2021. The articles were categorized according to the focus of the evaluation carried out, conceptualization and thematic analysis procedures, and aggregated into five categories of analysis: 1) users’ profile; 2) food handlers; 3) leftovers, food loss and waste; 4) physical-functional structure; and 5) promotion of the human right to adequate food. Results 35 articles were included. There was a predominance of a quantitative approach and, among the focus of the studies, the most recurrent was related to the “users’ profile” (54%), followed by the categories: “food handlers” (14%), “Leftovers, food loss and waste” (14%), “promotion of the Human Right to Adequate Food” (12%), and “physical-functional structure (6%). 88.5% of the studies discuss the equipment in a sectored way, evaluating specific items of the equipment and/or the population served. Only four studies discussed Popular Restaurants as promoters of the Human Right to Adequate Food. Conclusion There was a scarcity of the analyzed literature, attesting to the existing gap in the role of Popular Restaurants in the promotion of Food and Nutrition Security. It is recommended to carry out evaluative studies that can contribute to the qualification and expansion of Popular Restaurants as instruments to promote the Human Right to Adequate Food and fight hunger.

Methods This is an integrative review with searches performed in Scopus, Virtual Health Library, Directory of Open Access Journals, Scientific Electronic Library Online, Web of Science, PubMed and Google Scholar databases. The capture of studies was limited to the period from 2011 to 2021. The articles were categorized according to the focus of the evaluation carried out, conceptualization and thematic analysis procedures, and aggregated into five categories of analysis: 1) users’ profile; 2) food handlers; 3) leftovers, food loss and waste; 4) physical-functional structure; and 5) promotion of the human right to adequate food. Results 35 articles were included. There was a predominance of a quantitative approach and, among the focus of the studies, the most recurrent was related to the “users’ profile” (54%), followed by the categories: “food handlers” (14%), “Leftovers, food loss and waste” (14%), “promotion of the Human Right to Adequate Food” (12%), and “physical-functional structure (6%). 88.5% of the studies discuss the equipment in a sectored way, evaluating specific items of the equipment and/or the population served. Only four studies discussed Popular Restaurants as promoters of the Human Right to Adequate Food. Conclusion There was a scarcity of the analyzed literature, attesting to the existing gap in the role of Popular Restaurants in the promotion of Food and Nutrition Security.
